fl RACE WAR :
I
Grows out of Politics Near,

|l|fl WERE WOUNDED.
Saturday Night Broil Ends
Disastrously.
Opelika, Ala., Aug., I.—On
Saturday night at 12 o’clock n
desperate flight brought on by
politics, nearly precipstated a
race war near Cusseta, between
here end West Point. The Sun
day quiet has been broken bv
the tramp of armed men and
this whole section has been at
fever heat, while many a heart
was throbbing with suppressed
excitement.
The news is so conflicting that
it is impossible to get at definite
details, though the purport of all
reports is the same. Politics in
Chambers county, where the
difficulty occurred, are at fever
heat and the main fight lies be
tween the democrrtic and popu
list candidates for probate
judge.
Yesterday morning the Dem
crats held a meeting near Cus
seta and their orators divided
them with the populists. Last
night the populists held a meet
ing and reports say refused to
divide time with democrats;
thereupon the democrats with
drew and started up a separate
speaking and in the midst of
these movements some one shot
at a Mr. Mitchell and wounded
horse.
» He left at once for Cusseta and
out warrants of ths par u
and returned, When he again
reached the acene his posse was
fired into and they returned the
fire and a desperate fight ensued.
In the quiet stillness of the
early Sabbath morning the rattle
of shotguns and winchesters
seemed strangely odd and after the
onslaught was over it was found
that the following whites were
seriously wounded :
W. J. Busbee. W. W. Meadows.
Also the following negroes. John
Hull, Will Floyd, Tom Combs
and Charles Morgan.
It is believed that others are
wounded.
The report reached here this
morning tnat the negroes w r ere
arming and gathering for the
purpose of wiping out the white
race,
The air is full of aumors and
there was great uneasiness on
every hand, as the white people
at Cusseta are very few.
Forty men, armed to the teeth
left here yesterday afternoon at
8 o’clock for the scene. They
carried hundreds of rounds of
ammunition for their winches
ters and shots and went prepared
to maintain the supremacy of
the white race.
When they got there they
found white men pouring in
from all the surrounding coun
try. They came on foot, on
horseback, in wagons, buggies
and carts. La Fayette furnished
about seventy five white men,;
and West Point sent as many
more.
All trains were stopped at the
scene sf the trouble by the At
lanta and West Point railway to
facilitate the restoring of peace
by placing men there and furth
er trouble was quelled.
A number of the instigators
have been arrested, but the ring
leaders escaped. Some of the
negroes who were iu the crowd
are here and will be arrested.!
People are returning to thei '
homes.
It 13 not known whether or
not any of the wounded will die.
The negroes in this section
are growing very insolent. One
advocated in a public political
speech the keeping of winches
ters and other arras in every
negro house and of resisting
with bloodshed any attempt of
the police to interfere with their
rights.
