WERE AT POLICE COURT
I t
This Morning Several Cates
Were Tried.
Recorder Eubanks held a vety
lively court this morning. They
were there from "Beaver Slide,”
Bales Row, “Morphine” street
and Railroad street.
The first case called was
against Fannie Branch and
Minnie Wright, cel, two profes
sional street walkers. They were
charged with getting drunk and
raising a disturbance at Lizzie
Drisdell’s, a white woman’s
house on "Morphine” street,
which does not bear the beat of
reputations. They threw rocks
in her windows and used some
very naughty language.
The evidence showed that
Lizzie was as much to blame as
the negroes and the trio was put
down for 115.00 each.
Old Malinda Wright got
warmed up and became very
boisterous. She wat sent to the
•‘c< oler.”
The next case tried was
against Emma McKenzie <f
“Beaver Slide,” charged with
drunk and disorderly. For some
time Emma and her neighbor, a
Mrs. Mclutire, have not been on
very good terms, yesterday they
had it out. Mrs. Mclntire’s child
ha« been sick and she claimed
Emma "hoodooed” it, which
caused it. Mr. Mclntire went to
Einma’t house and gave an ex
hibition in dancing in a drunk
state, and the whole family got
Recorder Eubanks put Emma
down for $2.00 or 5 day and dis
missed the case agai ist the
others.
J. C. Livingston, a blind
tramp, was given until 3 o’clock
this afternoon to leave town.
There is more Catarrh in this
section of the country than all
other diseases put together, and
until the last few years was sup
posed to be incurable. For a great
many years doctors 'pronounced
it a local diseas, and preseibed lo
cal remedier, and by constantly
failing to cure with local treat
ment, pronounced it incurable
Science has proven catarrh to be a
constitutional disease, and there

AS A SIDWAWAY
Was Colonel Reeves’ Wife
on Transport.
PLUCKY LITTLE WOMAN
On The Way to Manila, But he
Didn’t Know it.
San Francisco. Cal., Aug 5.
—Honolulu, July 28.—Mrs.
Reeves, wife of the gallant
colonel of the Thirteenth Min
nesota, anived here on the
transport City of Para, as a stow
away. She defied government
regulations and has come this
far on her way to Manila.
Mrs. Reeves slipped past the
guaid on the transport, and, as
was suspected by many San
Franciscoans, made the voyage
to the tropics, defying army and
navy regulations. Whether Col.
Beeves was aware of the pres
ence of his wife on shipboard
when the Para sailed for Manila
is, of course, not known to any
one but himself, and he will not
tell.
Mrs. Reevea stepped ashore
here when the transport arrived,
smiled a knowing smile and re
plied to the question : “Did you
come on the Para?” in language
something like this :
“Well, I got here, didn’t I?”
Friends of Col. Reeves say
that the officer did not know
that his wife was on the steamer.
The private soldiers of the Min
nesota regiment aided Mrs.
Reeves to hide away, and once
at sea she was safe from the
regulations.

BRDGHT SICK HONE
I
Not Cleaned After Carrying
Horaes To Cuba.
Washington. Aug s.—The War
Department has on its hand still
an other hospital-sh'p horror.
Information has reached the
department that the condition of
affairs on the Santiago, which
uas arrived at Egmont Key,
Fla., with sick and wounded on
board, is fully as bad as that of
tha Seneca and Concho.
The Santiago arrived at the
quarantine station several days
ago, and since then the sick sol
diers have been kept aboard the
ship.
The vessel was last used for
transporting the horses of General
Randolph’s artillery brigade to
Santiago, aud was converted into
a huge stable for that purpose.
It is reported unofficially to the
War Department that the Santi
ago was s'arted on the return 'trip
without having been cleaned. She
carries abou' 200 sick officers and
men. •

A BYRD’S EYE VIEW
Time works changes. I was i
in to see Capt. J. L. Bass, head
of Bass Bros & Co’s.. big
stores, where I had gone in
quest of “copy” for a change in
the half-page ad of that big
mercautileconcern, (the ad will
be changed tomorrow, Keep an
eye for it,) and saw my old
friend F. J. Kane, at his old!
post.
*
* *
It seems but a month since
Frank held a responsible posi
tion behind those same counters,
though iu reality it has been I
about three years. In that time 1
he has operated one of the best
dry goods houses that has ever
opened its doors to the Rome
trade.
* *
*
A few days ago he made a
lightning-like change, failing to
buy out the Bass Bros & Co’s.,
big retail house, he made Capt.
Joe Bass an offer on his own
big sto-k of goods, and the trade
was closed instanter.
*
* *
Yesterday the last of this big
stock was moved to Bass Bros,
&Co„ and today Frank Kank is
at his old post, only now he is
in charge of the sales depart
ment of the Bass Bros & Cos’ !
tremendous stock of bargains.
* *
I don’t believe there is a bet
ter posted, more thorough drv
goods man in Georgia than F.
J. Kane, young man though he
be. In securing him Bass Bros &
Co,, have scored as big a scoop
as they did in securing the big
stock of F. J. Kane & Co.
