Washington. Aug. 11—See
retfny Day and Ambassador
Cambon have agreed upon the
protocol and Cambon has cabled
to Madrid for authority to sign
it.
It is officially admitted at the
state department that the terms
lain down by the U. S., have
n °t been changed. It is hoped
that Cambon v ill get the requir
ed authority to sign the protoc

Secretary Day admits that the
controversy is satisfactorily set
rod and that the peace commit
sioners will soon be appointed.

commissioners will be named by
the United States to meet com

It may be supposed to summar

United States and conceded by

1 battles being the largest and
I most import ant ever fought in
' that part of the island. With
i heWs of victory, however, comes
a story 'of Cuhan suffering from
' starvation and and appeal for
further aid from the United
States.
The principal battle was ‘the
result of the successful attempt
of Gen." Gomez, with 3000 men
•to force the trocha between Las
Vilas and Camaguey. '1 he trocha
at this important point was
guarded by 4000 Spaniards un
der Gen. Jiminez Castellanos.
Gen Gomez led his soldiers in
person, and the main body of
Spaniards after a stubborn re
sistance gave way before a
•machete charge of the Cubans
The entire Cuban force passed
over the dividing line and
marched without further inter
ruption to Catnaguey. Over 300
Spaniards were killed and about
130 Cubans. 1 There were many
wounded on both sides.
In Ties Palmas, Gen. Diaz,
with a comparatively small body
of Cuban ’ soldiers, engaged a
Spanish column GOO strong,
drove them out of the villag*
and took possession of it, togeth
er with a stme of arms and pro
visions.
