A Social Event of the. year and

b
* On the evening of August 23 J
o the trustees of Shorter College
E propose to tender a brilliant re-
J ception to the citizens of this
I city and section, in honor of the
1 new faculty of the college.
Ihe affair is to be made the
i midsummer social event, and
bids fair to eclipse in point of
1 brilliancy any social function
1 known in the history of the city.
1 he board of trustees have at
great expensej'enovated the rec-
J itation halls and dormitories off
' the college. They have spent
5 hundreds of dollars on new ap—
* aratus and renovations and re
-1 modelings, & etc , have expend
-1 ed thousands of dollars.
The result is that President
Simmons and his matchless staff
of professors, instructors, teach-1
ers and assistants will find old !
1 Shorter perhaps the very best]
equipped female college in the
' South.
’ The faculty, as seated above, '
lis a matchless one, and reflects
' credit upon the splendid judge
ment of the board of trustees, a
board that is thoroughly modern
'in its ideas of what a fir o t-class 1

Tt is this spirit progreßs
that has suggested th r ? C eption
as being the proper ru&; uni of
bringing the people of Ro. eand
the members of the new fan | t v
ot the college together at t. o
very outset, an action that b
essentially necessary—for the
people of Rome and Shorter Col
lege should always know each
other that they may more easily
work in harmony for the mutual
development and growth of the
college and city.
The college is to be beautiful
ly decorated and the buildings
land grounds brilliantly illumi
nated upon the night of the 23d.
Mrs. Simmons, wife of. the
new president and a woman of
rare accomplishments, is visit
ing her old home in Eufala, but
will arrive in Rome next week.
Mrs. Simmons’ sister, Mrs.
Jones, of Durham, perhaps the ;
handsomest woman in the Caro- i
linas, will assist in preparing i
the college buildings for the re- i
ception. (
All in all, th e outook for t
Shirter, for the ensuing year is
decidedly bright. If you are a
Roman, maketno other engage
ment for the night of August
23 rd.
Highly Interesting.
The series of meetings at the
First Baptist church are growing
in interest every day. The beat
of the series was on Friday
night. Extra seats were placed
in the large lecture room and
all of them were filled.
Quite a number have profess
ed faith in Christ, some of whom
will unite with the church this
i morning.
1 It is hoped that Dr. Smith
will be present to preach at 11
. o’clock this morning.
Mr. Wolfsohn’s singing has
i been highly enjoyed by the large
i congregations. •
[ His solos are unusually fin*'.
I They are the gospel in song. He
, will sing at all the services to
day.
>L The meetings will continue
e firing the coming week at the
I- sarne hours. Everybody is urged
i to come and take part in these
f meetings.

, CHICK & PETERS
At The Mobley Park Theatre all
Next Week.
Ihe success of the Chick &
Teters Co., at the park theatre
last week induced General Man
ager of the City Electric Ry., to
engage them for this week.
1 he company has given Rome
some first class vaudeville enter
tainments. l'he cinematagraph
alone is well worth the time and
money to see and those who did
not attend last week should not
miss the opportunity of seeing
the wonderful war pictures of
the blowing up of the Mane,
staking a Spanish fort, troops
leaving Ohicamauga and many
other interesting views.
In Macon, Columbus, Atlanta
and other larpe cities where they
have played previous to coming
to Rome they have had crowded
houses.
Mr. Marvin has gone to a
great expense in giving Rome a
first class place of amusement
and he should be encouraged by
being liberally patronized.
