Os the Siek at Chickamauga
Park Camp.
CRIMINAL l|f DEGREE
Higocous Investigation Camp
Reeking With Filth
Chattanooga, Tf-nn., Aug. 16. —
The division cf General Btiignr
will go to Loxmgton sure. It is
not ao certain that Geiit-ral Me*
Kta’s division will go to Knox
ville. on account of the water
supply.
All preparations for the grand
review to oecur tomorrow have
been completed. The condition of
the camp hospitals i« occupying
almost the entire attention of Gen
eral Breckinridge.One of the chief
medical officer. in talking es the
hospitals this morning said.
“People can have no idea what
these poor fellows hava had to un
dergo, and in my opinion one half
of the deaths that have occurred
at the park have been caused by
absolute, and in some cases crim
inal, neglect on the part of some
one. I know the difficulties in the
way ot providing against such
things. But there was no reason
in the world why a rich Govern
ment like that of the United
States should not have provided
for the sick n its army. The neg
lect and incompetency of officers
is no excuse The Government has
no right to subject its citizens to
the dangers of being controlled by
incompetents, and the Govern
meut is direct'y responsible for
nine-teathe of the sickness and
dea'hs at Chickamauga Park.
“Everybody who has mads a
tairand impartial investigation of
the park declares its absolute sal
ubrity naturally. Its water is pure
its grounds high and rolling, and
easily drained, and yet this beau
tiful spot was allowed to reek with
filth and poison and pollute the
fresh mountain air with the ef
fluvia from uncovered sinks and
reeking piles of rotting garbage,
thrown in heaps on ths open
ground. It was shameful, and
when the time for official invee*
tigatiou shall come, as come it
will, somebody is going to be hit
hard. One regiment ean’t complain
that the park is unhealthy, when
another regiment not a mile awav
has only.half dozsn or so meu in
the hospitals, and there are e
number ot such regiments in the
camp.
“Men have to be ueglec'ed be
cause there are not enough physi
cians and nurses and many die be
cause they bad not been properly -
treated at the beginning of their
illness.”
These defects have been very
much worse than they are now,
and Gen . Breckinridge is making
every endeavor to provide the
necessary assistance for the pro
per cure of the m< j n.
