BRfIVR OLD SCHLEY
A Letter From the Lioc
hearted Horn of Santiago.
i|E LOVES HIS PEOPLE
A r.d Is Proud to Serve Them In
Any Capacity.
Burlington, 10., Aug. 16
AV. W. Baldwin, of this city, is
in receipt of a letter from his
personal friend, Commodore
Schley, which he prizes very
highly. It is as follows:
"U. S- S. Brooklyn, Guantan
amo Bay, Cuba, Aug. 4,1898.
My Dear Mr. Baldwin. Thank
you for your note. The clipping
of poetry inclosed is very clever.
J am much touched by the uni
versal exprtssions reaching me
by every mail. I think I am
fairly well balanced, but I shall
have to keep my ‘lifts and brac
es’ pretty square or I run soma
risk of being spoiled by this
general acclaim of praise. I felt
honored by any place in the line
that morning where I could best
serve my people and my coun
try, for I have loved them with
purity and intensity all my life,
and God bless them. As long a s
lam given strength to act for
them anywhere, no matter at
what sacrifice, I stand readv for
their service or defense. Again
thanking you, my dear friend,
1 am very sincerely yours,
W. 8. Schley.

RUSSIA'S DISCLAIMER
Promptly Entered by the Journ
al de St. Petersburg.
London. Aug. 16.—The for
eign office, it is reported here,
though ihe report as yet lac ks
co ifirmatic n, intends to demand
that the Chinese government
dismiss Prince Li Hung Chang
from power on the groued that
he is responsible for the recent
anti-Brit’sh attitude of the
Tsung-Li-Yamen.
The foreign office, it is also
asserted, has had under special
consideration the question of
seizing the Taku forts on the
gulf of Pe-Chi-Li, at the mouth
of the Pekin river, and the city
of Tien-Tsin, the port of Pekin,
in the event of China refusing
tu comply with the demand,
holding all until compliance is
issued.
Meanwhile the semi-official
Journal de St. Petersburg, in to
day’s issue, deprecates the tone
of the British press and savs :
“Russia does not contemplate
further acquisitions in the far
East. Her only object is to pre
serve the advantages recently
gained. The Russian govern
ment does not desire to injure
the economic interests of Great
Britain any more than those of
mit other power.”
Bottled Up!
Whether in the form of pill powdei
•r liquid, the doctor’s prescription foi
blood diseases is always the same—
mercury or potash. These drugs bottlt
up the poison and dry it up in the
system, but they als > dry up the marrow
in the bones at the same time.
The suppleness and elasticity of the
joints give way to a stiffness, the rack
ing pains of rheumatism. The form
gradually bends, the bones ache, while
decrepitude and helplessness prema
turely take possession of the body, and
it is but a short step to a pair of
crutches. Then comes falling of
the hair and decay of the bones, —a con
dition truly horrible.

RELIABILITY
is a quality some newspapers have lost sight of in these
days of "yellow” journalism. They care little for truth
and a great deal for temporary sensation.
It is not so with THE CHICAGO RECORD.
The success of THE RECORD rests upon its reliability.
It prints the news—all the news—and tells the truth
about it.
It is the only American newspaper outside New York city
that has its own exclusive dispatch boat service and its
. own staff correspondents and artists at the front in both
hemispheres.
It is the best illustrated daily newspaper in the world. - J
Its war news service is unapproachably the best. |
Says the Urbana (Ill.) Daily Courier:
“We read the war news in the other papers,
then we turn to THE CHICAGO RECORD to
see how much of it is true.”
Sold by newsdealers everywhere and subscriptions received
by all postmasters. Address THE CHICAGO RECORD, 181
