J!r. anil Mrs. Bert V. Henson
And Relatives
MONEYS AND LANDS
To be Divided With The Mem
bers of The Tribe.
The Anniston Hot Blast says:
“Miss Bessie Jones, who for a
year or more has been a retouch
er in the photo parlors of Rus
sell Bros. —and a good one, ex
pert in th.: art, conscientious in
her work and popular with the
patrons of the establishment —
left Sunday for Sugar \ alley,
Ga., and today starts to Indian
Territory to claim a shore cl the
money and lands of the Chicka
saw tribe of Indians, of which
she is a member.
“Miss Jones is, in fact, an In
dian princess, genealogically
speaking, her great grandmoih
er Jones having been the daugh
ter of a chief of the Chickasaws
in north Gergia, who fell in
love with and m irried Miss
Bessie s great grandfather
a “paleface’Avho as w greatly
beloved and highly honored by
the Chickasaws.
“Sam Jones, the present chief
of the Chickasaws, is a grandson
er great grandson of this qouple
and is a cousin to Miss Bessie
Jones.
“At Sugar Valley Miss Jones
joined her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. B. W. Jones, her sister,
Miss Sallie Jones, who recently
visited her here, and her brother,
Mr. Charlie Jones, and all of
them will leave today for Indian
Territory to participate in the
division.
“Miss Jones’ brother-in-law
and sistsr, Mr. and Mrs. B. V.
Henson, who formerly lived hete
but who have been residents of
Rome for some time, have al
ready gone to far weste v n
home of their relatives, the
Chickasaws.
“The allotment of lands and
money will be made by the
Dawes commission under an act
of congsess which provides that
the lands owned by the tribe and
the moneys due it by the gov
ernment shall be divided among
the different members of the
tribe and owned in severalty
instead of in common as hereto
fore.
“It is not definitely known
what the individual shares will
be but it is believed that each
member of the tribe will get
about 700 acres of land and $7,-
000 or SB,OOO in cash. These
lands are said to be the finest in
the world.
“Miss Jones has a great mail}
friends here and each one hopes
that her share may be a hand
some our.
“The Chickasaws are one of
the five fully civilized tribes, the
others being the Choctaws,
Creeks, Cherokees and Semii.-
oles. The men are said to be
industrious, steady and ambi
tious and the women beautiful,
cleanly and remarkably virtu
ous.”
London, August 17. — the Hong
