EXCITEMENT Isl CAMP
Occasioned by Effort to Dis
cover Sentiment of Men.
The Griffin correspondent of
the Atlanta Constitution says in
that big newspaper this morn
ing :
Griffin, Ga . Aug. 21.—D0 the
men composing the Third Geor
gia regiment wish to be muster
ed out?
Or do they want to do garrison
duty in some of the newly ac
quired territory of the United
States.
Your correspondent received
instructions today to visit Camp
Northern and settle this much
mooted question, but after spend
ing about four hours listening to
tbe ‘‘scoffs and scorns and con
tumeliows taunim” of several offi
cers and the opprobation of oth
ers, he returned to the city
without having accomplished
the object of his trip satisfactor
ily.
But one fact was forcibly im
pressed upon his mind, and that
was that the question is a very
sore point to a number of the
officers. ,
O ilv three company streets
were visited, when the corres
pondent was persuaded that no
good would result from the in
vestigation, and "strife would be
engendered among th' men.
One company was lined up and ■
their captain stated that a news
paper correspondent was present
who wished to know how many
of them wanted to be mustered
out. He then asked all who
wished to be mustered out to
step forward three paces.
When he ceased speaking and
before the men could move his
lieutenant hastily added :
“Let all the d—d cowards step
Three men stepped from the
ranks and your correspondent
was told that that expressed the
will of the men of the company.
Another company was inform
ed by their lieutenant what was
wanted cf them and he asked all
wishing to return to their homes
and the peaceful avocations of
life aftei the war was over to
raise their hands. There were no
oaths hurled to the teeth of
these men—they were spoken to
in kindness and treated as gen
tlemen—and 75 per cent of the
men present raised their hands.
In the last company street
visited the me i objected to being
polled, and as it was not *an
order, but simply a request, the
matter was not pushed and the
men returned to the shelter of
their tents.
By this time the camp was in
i state of excitement. If a man
expressed the desire to return
home he was ridiculed by his
comrades and threatened with a
ride on a rail.
Officers would walk consider
able distances in a scorching
midday sun to inform your cor
•esponoent that newspapers had 1
no right to stir up strife among
the men, and if they would at
tend to tiieir legitimate business
they would be kept busy. They
. did, perhaps, express themselves |
somewhat more forcibly, but I
that was the gist of their re
marks.
All the officers, however, did
not look at the matter that way.
Some expressed a perfect willing
ness to have their men speak out
plainly and without intimida
tion. They said that if a fair
expression could be obtained at
hast 60 per cent of the men
would vote to return to the-r
homes and business, and if their
men wished to let that fact be
known they weie perfectly free
to do so.
Col. Candler expressed his
willingness for the reporter to
nterview the men and said he
would like to know how
many preferred to be mustered
out, lie would be glad to give
an honorable discharge to every
man who desired it, as he had
applications from more than
enough men to take the places
I of all who were discharged.
Whether the privates in the
Third regiment wish to be mus
tered out or not may'be a de-
I batable question, but it is a
positive fact that some of its
officers would oppose the move—
j ment most strenuously.
'The hospital is well filled with
i patients, but'none are seriously
ill and never remain within the
walls of the hospital when a
shady spot without offers any
temptation.
