SUBSCRIBE!] SBOO,OOO For a War Ves s el-Now They Want Tlie Money Back. Havana, Sept. 7, via Key West, Sept. 9 —Two years ago the Spanish merchants of Ha vana, filled with patriotic ardor, began a collection for the pur chase of a warship for the Span ish navy. A short time ago the money contributed reached the comfortable sum of SBOO,OOO, which was given into the keep hig of the captain general. But now ensues one of the most strenuous and p linful cases of bargain ruling the world his y«t seen. The Spanish patriots want that money back, and they want it badly. They say, with a of dry humor, that they have discovered that a Spanish warship is not a good investment But does the captain general loosen his grip? Oh, no I He de clares that the money was do uated to the Spanish navy, and >t shall go to the Spanish navy. 1 he Havana merchants now see themselves in the position of people who got overpatriotic at the wrong time. An SBOO,OOO joke is almost too expensive to incite laughter o s P' ialiy in t|, e | Ban who pays, but the victims manage to grin , * ll; -y tried to withdraw in order to build. with it a g> eat Spanish clubhouse and in this way draw closer to gether the Spaniards who are to stay here, and make them thus present a firmer front to the s icial and commercial attacks of the Cubans aifd the coming American. Even this fine idea did not catch the captain gener al. About half a dozen unarmed men landed yesterday from the relief ghip in the uniform of the United States regular army. They strolled around the streets, entered the cases and did as they pleased. Os course, .they attracted a great deal of atten tion. They were very tall men, giants to the people of Havana, and besides they were American soldiers. Asked how they had been treated they answered : “Oh, we’ve been used all right. We mind our own busi ness and nobody says anything to us.” • The newsboys went screaming through the streets yesterday, selling a translation of the Con stitution of the L nited States. They Hew here and there with it excitedly, as if it were a war extra ; so much so that two or three Americans were misled into buying it, expecting to read the fall of New York. The bones of Columbus still agitate a few minds. Today the papers announce joyfully that the Duke of Veragua, lineal de scendan of the discoverer, has decided that he and he alone shall have the bones The harbor is growing lively with shipping. The time to make 2,000 per cent on the sale of provisions in Hayana has al ready passed. Merchants who Jiink otherwise are likely to in cur serious loss. In three days th i whole situation has changed. The wharves are now piled high anti there is even more still in thebiy. When Blmco decided to refuse Red Cross relief it w. s p:etty certain that Havana had plenty of food. If the army is making any preparations for embarking for Spain it is not apparent. Beware of Imitations Min acaa. Meara, M» vewa. I RELIABILITY is a quality some newspapers have lost sight of tn these days of “yellow” journalism. They care little for truth • and a great deal for temporary sensation. . It is not so with THE CHICAGO RECORD. The success of THE RECORD rests upon its reliability. It prints the news—all the news—and tells the truth about it. I It is the only American newspaper outside New York city » that has its own exclusive dispatch boat service and its own staff correspondents and artists at the front in both hemispheres. ( It is the best illustrated daily newspaper in the world. • Its war news service is unapproachably the best. z* Says the Urbana (111.) Daily Courier: “We read the war news in the other papers, then we turn to THE CHICAGO RECORD to see how much of it is true.” I Sold by newsdealers everywhere and subscriptions received by all postmasters.
