known since the reserve was es

census of Chicago shows that in
one block in the Sixteenth ward
there are but seven American be rn
residents out of a total of 2727.

another block there are 2583 Toles
out of a total population of 2584,
the other man being a Chinamm.
The total populaVou of the city is
estimated at 1,851,588, which fig
ures would indicate a growth of
over 70 percent since 1890.

Commissioner Evans, of the
Pension Office, has had prepared a
statement showing that up to Sep
tember 2 there had been filed with
his office a total of 246 claims for
pension on account of the la*e war.
Os these 45 per cent, are invalid
pensions. The details are. Invalid,
110, widow, 61, minor 2, mother,
49, father 24.

It is said that the waiters in
some of Gotham’s swell cases add
to their incomes by the sale of
champagne corks, a number of en
terprising foreigners having work
ed up quite a business in the
second-hand branded steppers,
which bring five or six cents
apiece. The cork eventually find
their way to the makers of certain
inferior brands of wine, which are
palmed off upon the unsophistica
ted as imported.
