Peace Commissioners to Paris Not Dollar-a-Day Mn. THE EXPENSE ACCOUNT Is Royal in its Generous Propor tions. Washington, Sept. 22.—Peace Commissioners do not work for ■a dollar a day. In fact, they are J>Tetty well paid. So are their secretaries and attaches. Those ■distinguished gentlemen who have left for Paris will not need pocket money. 'Thej' are to lack nothing to adequately maintain their offi cial position, and even the mes sengers are to h e given liberal allowances for their personal expenses. Because roost of the members of the commission are already 7 in the government service, they will get no additional salaries for their work with the Peace Commission. Thus, Commissioners Davis, Frye and Gray, who are drawing salaries as United States sena tors, will not receive any, addi tional compensation beyond the payment of their daily expenses. The same is true of all the minor attaches, each of whom is em ployed in the departments in Washington, and whose regular salaries are continued during their absence on this mission. The only men attachsd to the commission who will receive salaries for their seryices are J tide e Day, the president of the commission, Whitelaw Reid and Mr. Moore, who resigned his place as Assistant Secretary of State to accompany the commis sion as its secretary and coun selor. It is expected that Commis sioners Day and Reid will be given a fee of $25,000 each for their work on the commission, and that Secretary Moore, upon whom much of the work of pre paring the documents in the American case has devolved, will receive a fee of $20,000. Mr. Corbin, son of Adjutant General Corbin, whu accompa nies the commission as an at tache, will probably get SISOO as a recompense for his services. The American government is paying the expense of the ladies who are members of the party, and it is calculated that the !items of transportation alone for the 35 persons in the party by [sea and rail will amount to at least $25,000. The special ex penses of the commission in Paris for entertainments, etc:, will probably be not less than $15,000 or $20,000. Taking into consideration the salaries that will have to be paid to persons who take the places of the attaches of the commis sion during their absence from Washington, it will be seen, therefore, that a quarter of mil lion dollars will scarcely foot the bill. A NARROW ESCAPE. Thankful words written by Mrs. Ada E. Hart, Groton S. D. “Was taken with a bad cold which settled on my lungs; cough set in and finally termi nated in Consumption. Four doctors gave me up, saying I could not live but a short time. I gave myself up to my Savior, determined if I could not stay with iny friends on eajth, I would meet my absent ones above. My husband was advis ed to get Dr. King’s New Dis covery for Consumption,Coughs and Colds. I gave it a trial, took in all eight bottles. It has cured me, and thank God I am saved and now a well and healthy woman.” Trial bottles free at Curry-Arrington’s. Regular size 50 cents and SI.OO, guaranteed or price refunded. THE CREW BOXED At the Strange Phenomenon Aboard Their Vessel. New York, Sept. 22.—Strange things happen on the seas and none stranger than off the New Jersey Highlands yesterday, It was a quiet, warm, sultry day, with scarcely a cloud in the sky, with no sea on and barely wind enough to move cigar smoke. The American schooner Anna had sailed yesterday from this port for Charleston. As there was next to no wind prog ress was necessarily slow, and so it was well along in the day before they passed the bar and stood away to the South. The wind was still drowsing when nig it came. .he crew were lolling about the deck Suddenly, without any warning, there was a crash, a sound of splintered wood and straining cordage., followed by a succes sion of sharp reports, as the stays gave way, and then shat tered spars came clattering down to the deck. The schooner still rocked lei surely on the light swell. There was still no wind worthy the name. Investi. ation showed that the fore and maintop masts of the vessel had been carried away, and the crew went to work clearing the wreckage. This morning they hailed the tug Olympia and the disabled schooner was towed back to port for repairs . Capt. Woodhull said that he was unable ‘o ex plain the accident. :■ i aransrsf - -.: :.« m uwassTH - * ............. ». | A WHOLE CLUB g U’U in z Ca ’* a ;'.w ..
