An ther strange negro who gave 11 Qauae Charley Johnson, Uock Pinson and Charley Hill Ind who claimed to be from Newnan got sl2 or 30 days. He attempted, last night, to force an entrance into the residence of a Fourth ward white- citizen. The citizen detected him and gave chase. The “coon” fell in a muddy ditch, which was about 10 feet deep, and was fished out by the police and locked up. Is Improving.—Miss Ella Gil liard who was so painfully injured in a runaway a few days ago. is re ported to be recovering nicely, at her mother’s home on 2nd Ave. The Pepper Cottage.—The Pepper cottage on Third avenue has been renovate 1 and Mr. C-M. Fouche, and family niw resid ing on Tower Hill, will soon oc cupy it. Erank Huffaker, who has been Mr. J. D. Taylor’s stenographer] several months past, has accepted a position in Atlanta Mr. Rush of Floyd county, takes his place m Mr. Taylor’s office.—Summer ville News. Change Os Management.—Mrs. McG'aughlin, an experienced and successful hotel manager from Tennessee, has leassd the Wim berly house on Second Avenue, and under her management it will no doubt become exceedingly pop ular as a boarding house. Mr. Marvin.—Manager J. B. Marvin, of the City Electaic Rail way, who is in New York and the east combining a business and pleasure trip, is expected to arrive home the latter part of the week . Mr. Marvis is a hustler and to hit indomitable energy and splendid enterprise Rome owes much. Epworth League.— lhe Ep worth League of the First Methodist church will have a young folks entertainment at the church tomorrow afternoon from 4vo 6 and tomorrow eve ning from 7to 11. Death of Samuel Noble.— From a private telegram receiv ed today, we learn of the sad death of Samuel Noble, son of Wm. Noble, of Anniston, Ala. Mr. Noble was one of the first to volunteer and was a member of the 2nd Ala., Reg., which is now camped in Anniston. He was twenty four years old. His aunt, Mrs. H. A. Smith, will attend the funeral in Anniston tomor row. Wants $20,000 Damages,— In the city court today, the case of Will Duncan, col, vs. the Southern Railway is being tried. Duncan is the negro boy who was run over, about a year ago, by a Southern train. As a result of his encounter with the train Duncan lost both legs. Through his attorneys, Messrs. Fouche & Fouche and Wright & Ewing, he asks tor $20,000 damages. The road is being defended by Col. C. W. Underwood and Messrs. Shumate & Shumate. Ont., Sept. £22 The e opleUntario are exercised over the discussion in the Mont real Anglican synod on the low birth rate in Ontario. The situa tion has been ascribed by the ministers largely to causes over which persons have absolute con* trol and the matter involves ques tions of grave moral responsibili ty. Another reason given is the em ployment of women in stores and elsewhere, driving men to other fields and thus lessening the mar riage rate, which in Ontario, is far below that of any country in the world. The migration of young men from rural districts is another cause of the low birth rate. VENGEANCE Visited Up n Alleged Negro Murderer. Wetumpka, Ala., Sept. 22, — Three months ago an aged white fanner and his wife, living near this place were robbed and mur dered in their home. The follow ing day five negro-e were arrested charged with lhe crime. Fonr were taken from the Wetumpka -Tail by a mob and lynched. The fifth . Joe Thompson, escaped. Rast Saturday he was captured and three citizens started with him for the j til at Dadeville. They returned and reported that the prisoner had escaped again. The following day his disemboweled body was found iu the Tallapoosa River. He had evidently been murdered. Governor Johnson has offered S2OO for the arrest of his murder ers and will prosecute the case vi gorously . “Brigadier Bill’’ disappointed all Romans in order to play even with Congressman Maddox He had the Rome company sent on to Atlanta and placed in camp for seyeral days,when the gallant boys might have camped at home with loved ones. “Briga dier Bill” is more “popular” in Rome now than ever before.
