Bonaparte. Don’t you get it?”
“Oh, yes, it’s Mr. Bonaparte.
Yon must excuse me—there’s
such a huzzing in the ’phone.
“That’s so. I just called you
up to offer my congratulations.”

for?”
“Why, this American war is
sure to throw us both out of the
magazines for months and
months to com;.”
“That’s so. Ain’t it nice? Such
a rest for both of us. They were
overworking us dreadfully.

General Waites Makes Com
pllfitt to Alger.
QUARTERMASTER BLfIJVIEO
—L—*2—
And Denounced- Orders for
-Vater Boilers not Honored
Lexington, Ky.,Snpt. 22—Whili
Secretary of War Alger was here
General Waites told hnn that the
neglect of sume quartermaster# tcq
furnish supplies was criminal.
While in Chickamauga he fre
quently made requisitions which
were not honored. An imperative
order had been sent to have ail
water boiled.
He bed made a requisition on
Quartermaster General Lee for
water boileis.No attention was
paid to hie requisition and after
repeatedly urging Quartermaster
Genora! Lee to send th* boilers,
telling him how the men were con
trading typhoid foyer, he was met
with a reply which read ; ,
“The war department dees not
furnish boilers. ”
General Waites then purchased
the boilers himself, but the seeds
of typhoid had been sown, and ths
daily reports showed the list of
deaths and of cases in the hos
pitals. Pointing at Quartermaster
Ludington, General Waites said:
“These men cannot say it was
somebody else’s fault, It was the
fault of Quartermaster General
Lee and it was the fault of Quar.
termaster Ludington, who is stand
ing right there. ”
Ludington made no reply to
Waites, as Sternberg had done to
Sanger.
SAYS BOILERS WERE SENT.
Washington,September 22—The
quartermaster's department of the
army states that the claim made
by certain officers that boilora were
not furnished for boding water at
Chickamauga is not true. On the
same date that Chief Qaartermas
ter Lae telegraphed for the boilers
2,000 were sent and a little later
500 more. It is also stated that the
soldiers would not drink the boils
ed water because it had a flat taste
and preferred and drank the fresh
water.

Washington, Sept. 22 —With
nearly one-sixth of a’l troops at
Santiago down wjth the fever, the
condition ot General Lawton’s

understood that he has recommen

is suggested by General Lawton
that oae regiment in addition to
the Cubau tioops which are now
am nable to discipline, will be
ample to garrison the town,

Splendid Attraction Goes on at
Popular Prices.
From present indications the
opera house will be jammed to
night and all who can secure
|seats before the doors open will
be more lucky than those who
come with “maddening throng.”
The company arrived today.
It was a pleasing sight seeing
the farniLar faces of Mr. Peru
chi’s company hobnobbing witn
our leading citizens and the
mutual regard of affection and
friendship renewed. We are in
formed that this present com
pany excells everything hereto
fore seen.
Judging from the newspaper's
reports of Nashville and Atlanta
this must be so.
Theatrical managers when
successful often forget little
things that made the public like
them and place them on the road
to prosperity, but Peruchi goes
them one better every time, He
watches 11 is company like a !
hawk does a sparrow and the
least little thing that goes wrong
an extra rehearsal is called. The
consequence is that every play I
is rehearsed with such careful 1
detail that a magnificent per
formance at night is the result.
Nor does stage responsibility
stop there —when the vaudeville
artists appear between acts an
other stage manager takes entire
charge of that department until
finished.
The reputation of the Peruchi-
Beldeni Co , has beou well earned '
by care and brains and continues «
“brushing up” of detail in all i
plays with a wise selection and/
judgement pro bono publico—
therefore the merry little come-i‘

egotism, say Veni Vidi Vici. I
