1 Naples, Italy, Sept. 23.
Frightful misery and immense
damage will be caused if the
eruption of Mt. Vesuvious con
tinues on the alarming scale it
. has reached in the last few days.
Nine new craters were count

Europe are flocking here to see (
(Vesuvius in eruption.
The spectacle at. night is one
of indescribable grandeur. The
paint, palpitating glow that nor
mally marks the great crater is
now (exchanged for a vivid
tongue of light, colored at times
almost like a rainbow, illumina
ting the heavens and reflected
with exquisite effect in the wa
ters as the bay.
These manifestations a?e ac
. companied by deep ' rumblings
and thunderous ■ subterranean
explosions,followed by great out
pourings of lava and, ashes.
The fresh lava streams mov
ing down the mountain side'
steadily encroaching more and
more on the cultivated regions,
have already caused extensile
loss.
