McCoy Doesn’t Know Where He
Will Fight,
New York, Oct 4. —Kid McCoy
is now training in earnest for his
fight with Jim Corbett, and, judg
ing from his looks, will be in great
condition when the bell taps.
He is doing his road work in the
morning and most of his indocr
work in the afternoon. The Kid
says he weighs 170 pounds, and
expects to fight, about 175.
He was examined by Dr, J. R.
Gordon, who pronounced him in
perfect physicial condition. McCoy
likes bis new quarters, on Jerome
Avenue, very much, and expects
to stay there until the fight. He
told me that he had no m?re idea
than any other person where the
fight will come off

Coveney, son of the late Postmas
ter Coveney, was thrown in a tackle
play and 11 men piled on top of
him. When Coveney was extrica
ted from the human mass it wfb
found that he was fatally injured
his neck being twisted’and his bg
paralyzed. He died at the City
Hospital yesterday.

Young Women Out.
Madison, Ind., Oct. 4.—The
Madison young women street car
canductors have quit. They say
they resigned to keep from being
discharged, it having been un
officially reported to them that
the company intended to run
the cars with boxes this winter
and let them go. They were all
paid off and complimented by

This is done on account of the

The Rainfall.—Mr, W. M.
Towers says that up to 7 o’clock
his forenoon there had been a
rainfall of 3.80 inches since
Sunday. Not less than an inch
fell this forenoon, which places
the rainfall for Rome at about
four nidus. The rivers are very
muddy and have risen several
feet. The clo’uds hang heavy
and look threatening this after
noon.

landlord of the Central hotel, is

Election Tomorrow—Justice
E. P. Treadaway with a force of
managers and clerks will con
duct the state and county elec
tions at the Rome box t omorrow.
So far as Rome and Floyd coun
ty is concerned the democratic
nominees will have a walkover,
as the opposition to them has
completely died out. The election
will probably be very quiet,
though about 4,000 voters have
qualified; It is to be hoped that
a heavy per cent of the registra
tion will be polled.

Major Merrill Here—Ma
jor A. H. Merrill, commanding
the Second Battalion, Second
Regiment Georgia Brigade of
Uniform Knights of Pythias,
paid an official visit to
Rome Company No. 11, last
night. Major Merrill was also
an honored visitor at Mt. Alto
K. of P. lodge last night, and
witnessed the splendid initiato
tory ceremony of the second de
gree, administered to four candi
dates. Major Merrill ig a promi
went K. of P. and one of Atlan
ta’s most substantial citizens.
He was delighted with th« hos
pitable reception extended by
Romans.
