MOHEGAN o|t A ROCK
And Went Down in 20 Minutes
After Striking.
Falmouth, Eng., Oct. 15.
The British steamer Mehegan,
Capt. Griffiths, belonging to the
Atlanta transport company, has
been wrecked in the vicinity of
tha Lizard between the Mai
acles and the Lowlands. It it
believed that about 129 persons
of her passengers and crew were
drowned. Only 45survivors have
reached the shore.
The officials of the Transport
company believe that most es
the passengers were Americans
who were returning home,
The Mohegan was formerly
the Cleopatra, of the Wilson <fc
Furness-Leland line. She left
London for New York ou
Thursday, having on board, as
far as can be ascertained, at
present, 59 passengers and a
crew of 115 officers aud men.
When the steamer was seen
tebe in distress, lifeboats pat
off from ihe shore, and every
effort possible was made to save
the passengers. The coast at this
point is extremely dangerous,
and has been the scene of num
erous wrecks.
The general opinion at present
is that the machinery of the
Mohegan became disabled dur
ing a heavy easte"ly gale which
was blowing, aud fliat she raa
ashore and foundered. A num
ber of tugs which put out from
this port to the assistance of the
Mohegan were compelled to re
turn without being able to ap
proach the vessel, owing to the
severity of tbe weather prevail
ing.
A lifeboat landed .31 of the
passei gers and ere w of Mohe
gan. One of the former, a
woman, died after being Lrought
ashore.

•
Washington, Oct. 15.—Gov
ernment aid in the shape of
army rations will be given to
the sufferers for the recent floods
in Georgia who are in need of
the barest necessities of life. The
application for assistance came
to the war department from
Hon. William Clifton, secretary
of ttate of Georgia and Repre
sentative Livingston.
Secretary Alger referred the
matter to the president, recom
mending favorable action, and
the former suggested that a
conference be had with the offi
cials of the department of jus
tice before anything was done.
This was held this morning,
and Solicitor General Richards,
who is acting attorney general,
holds that while there is no di
rect statutory for extending
such relief, there is do statutory
prohibition, and in view of tha
t fact that the government has
given assistance in such
emerge ncies as the present, he
. thought that the executive pow
