Constantinople, Oct. 19.—The
emperor and empress of Ger
many arrived here today.
TLe Hohenzollern anchored at
8:45 a. m. off Dolmabagtche
palace, with the Bertha and
Helva above and below here.
Soon afterwards the emperor
and empress entered the llohen
zollern’s long boat and were
rowed to the palace landing
stage, where they vyere received
by the sultan, who was sur
rounded by a brilliant suite. As
the landing took place the Ger
man warships and a hundred
guns from the batteries fired
salutes.
The long boat of the Hohen
zoilern on its way to the landing
stage had to steer clear of hun
dreds of boats, caiques and
launches containing officials po
licemen or spectators.
The scene was most animated.
Crowds of spectators thronged
the approaches to the Dolma
bagtche palace during the sa
lutes and shouted a welcome to ,
their majesties, which was an
swered by the “hoch” of the
German sailors. * <
The sultan’s sute included all j
the ministers and high author!- ,
ties and all the German military
officers now in the employ oi
of Turkey. The meeting between ,
the sultan and the guests was
most co’’dial. The sultan warmly I
shook hands with the emperor
and empress, and offering his
arm to the empress, led the way (
to a pavilion of the palace where
the party had a brief rest. (
Emperor William engaged in
animated conversation with the
sultan, the grand vizier and oth
er members of the sultan’s suite.
Another royal salute and the
imperial band, playing the Ger
man national anthem, announc
ed the crowds assembled outside
that their majesties were coming
out of the palace grounds.
The route from the Dolma
bagtche palace to the Yildiz
place was covered with red car
peting and lined with troops in
new uniforms, prominent among

Standing a little apart from
the crowd was large gatherings
of Turkish women, who occupied
a slope facing the Dolmabagtche
palace. In the rush of people to
secure points of vantage they
climbed trees, railings and posts.
The bright sun enhanced the
picturesqueness of the unique
scene. On all sides were to be
sesn brilliant uniforms and
crowds of white turbaned Turks.
All eyes centered on the gate
of the palace. Soon afterwards
the sultan appeared in full uni
form in an open carriage drawn
by four horses with outriggers
with the empress of Germany
on his right and Muir Pasha, the
grand master of ceremonies in
front of them. The empress,
who looked very well, bowed
continuously right and left in
response to the cheering of the
people.
In the second carriage was
