Pawnee Bill’s magnificent Wild
Wet-t exhibition arrived in this
citv over the Rome railway at an
early hour thia morning from Ch.it
lanooga and the splendid exhibi
tion given on the streets and at
North Rome this afternoon, is
sufficient proof that it is every
thing that hi a ben claimed for
it.
In view of the terrible massacre
at Bear Island, wide interest is
felt at present in the Red Man,
hsnee the dark-eyed and ewarth’
skinned people of Pawnee B’.U at
tracted special attention. The ad
dition of a section ot United States
field artillery, with a Napoleon
nine pounder, was especially not
iceable particularly in the parade.
Thsre are 150 head of horses
and something like 250 people in
the outfit, and of tne 58 Indian®,
over 40 are big, stalwart, massive
fellows some of them braves who
fought undi-r Sitting Bull and
Crtzy Hcrse in that blood} cam
paign, disastrous to the American
army when Custer was killed.
There are Indians in Pawnee
Bill s outfit who could tell a iot
about tbe Little Big Horn massa
cre if they chose to do so . Many
of them a’e dark, sullen looking
tellows, with a lurking hatred ot
the white man gleaming balefully
through their heavy eyes They
are of Sioux and Mojave tribes.
May Lillie,* wife of Pawnee
Bill, is the famous expert shot,
being the only woman on earth
who does her shooting on horse
back.
The show is distinctly American
and just now' Americanism is pop
ular. The A z‘ec. the Apache, the
typical Mexican and the pure Mex
jean of the Anglo-Saxon type the
Western plainsman are all on ex
hibiticn, ana the sight gives a pe
culiar tingle to American blot d at
thia time. And withal, it is a clean
•how devoid of any
features.
The parade this morning attract
ed ..early tha entire population to
the streets- It was unique in ev
ery respect, from the dainty and
prettily dressed heraldess to the
made-up “Rube” who lei on to in
terrupting the procession. This
fellow was so cleverly realistic
that some of the uninitiated sug
gested the cailiugof the police.
Tha Mexican band wy greatly
admired. The Mexicans seem to
be rare musicians, and some of
their national bands are the finest
in the world. There were ponies
and .bronchos aad burros, and
leng-horned Texas cattle and queer
looking cattle with un horns at all

l'he lariat thrower, the Jap,
tbe Turk, the Mexican, tbe
Cowboy of the West and the fe
male cow punchers of the plains,
like the fierce looking redtnen,
were superbly mounted. The
truth is Pawnee Bill’s Wild
West has’ a magnificent string
of horses. From the quick,
wirey, mettlesome and intelli
gent broncho to the massive
wagoners, every animal ranks
high in his class. The steck in
the parade this morning was
universally admired.
The performance- this after
noon was attended bv a large
and appreciative audience, who
found it in every particular up
to expectations. The riding,
shooting, mock Indian fightin"-,
lariat throwing, etc. , were ail

All indications point to a
crowded house tonight, when in
a brilliantly arena, tvery dela 1
of the afternoon performance
will bo repeated.
Col. Frank First, the sunny
tempered, genial natured press
agent of the big show, called at
the Rome Hustler Commercial
office this forenoon and found
everything, from editor and
business man ager down to press
man and ‘‘d vil,” the staft of
young lady compositors iuclud
ed, at the front enjoying tbe
immense parade. We forced him
to wait until the “free show”
was over and then had the
pleasure of a half hour’s chat
with him.
When Col. Frost lets hims.lf
out he is a three-ring circus with
all the accompaniments, in ami
of himself. His visit to the
sanctum this morning dispersed
the clouds and made us forget
that the “devil” was to pay in
the office. *
Pawnee Bill gives the people
a modern show—and is as far
ahead of the old time circus as
a motor car is-ahead of a “hay
burner. ”
Go see the show tonight—you
will get a long shot more than
your money’s Werth.

Whet'S Indian Women Are
Bought And Sold.
Vancouver, B. C., Nov. 2.
Robert Stead Dunn, ot Newport.
11, 1., graduate of Harvard uni
verity aud formerly editor of a
magazine, has arrived in Van
couver, after spending five
months on the Edmonton route
to tbe Klondike an in the little
known portion of tbe northwest
in the vicinity of Fort Graham.
Mr. Dunn, being possessed of
a trained literarv mind, observed
more than most others would,
and some of bis statements are
startling. He says Indian girls
are sold an I bought by win e
men in the far north He men
tions specific cases.
“I found,” he says, “that
clerks and other employes of the
Hud-on Bay company ‘at Fort
Graham live with the Indian
women they purchase from the
parents. I was informed that
rue man gave fifty blankets for
a wife. She is said to be a mag
nificent specimen of Indian
womanhood.”
Among other things, Dunn
tells of tbe terrible (hardships
endured by Major Hoodie, who
was sent by the government to
find away to the Klondike from
Edmonton. Moodie traveled
over mountains where no white
man had ever been. He was
twice starved out, once burned
out, and once robbed, but the
ntrepid pioneei is pressing on
He took to the mountains at
Fort St. John last autumn, and
has now only reached Fort Gra-.
ham. When asked when he
w mid reach the Klondike, he
replied ; “In two years, if 1 am
“lucky.” Many think that he will
! never reach there. There are
thirteen in the party.
