Council meeting Nov. 14, ’9B. Present Hon. J. J. Seay, mayor •nd Councilmen D. B. Hamil ton, Jr., C. W. Morris, Walter Harris, W. T. Jones, T. J. Reese and F. J. Kane. Minutes of Oct. 24th were read and confirmed. The appeal case of T. O. lie-' Intire from the Recorder’s court <as tried and said Mclntire was ’ound guilty of disorderly con duct and fined 17.50. Councilman Walter Harris reported that he had sold the reel house in the Fourth ward, which had been ordered, moved by the council, fer $12.50 and had paid the amount to the city clerk. Ihe saxton reported that du- r >ng the month of October there were ten interments in Myrtle Hill cemetery, four white and •lx colored, of the colored four Were paupers and one was a Ron-resident. Mr. L. A. Helm appeared in person before the council with a petition to be allowed to raise Hia sidewalk in front of his More in the Fourth ward. Upan hearing this petition it was re vived that Mr. Helm be allow ed to raise the sidewalk referred to some 16 or 18 inches under supervision of street committee This permission is to give no vested rights as to the grade but is only a temporary arrangement to meet a present emergency. The srteet committee was giv en until the next regular meet ing to report with reference to work alleged to have been dene upon the street railroad track. The city attorney made the following report which was re ceived by the council and order ed spread upon the minutes, to wit: — Rome, Ga., Nov. 14, 1898. To the Mayor and Council, Gentlemen: —I beg leave to report to your honorable body in reference to the reliability of the City Electric Railway Co., for the expense of certain pav ing on Second avenue, tswit, that portion between the rails of said railway track and three feet on each side thereof; that said City Electric Railway Co., is liable to the city of Rome for said paving. ~~ Respectfully submitted, C W Undirwood, City Att y. The gas and light committee is authorized to put a light on the Land Company bridge at such place ae might be deter mined by the committee. The petition of W. M. Shrop shire with reference to the con dition of the sewer at his resi dence was heard, and the street committee instructed to make a change in the sewer petitioned for. The drainage of Broad street near Pollock’s and Van Dyke s stores, was referred to the street committee with power to act. The petition of Mr. Hiram Hill as to pay for crushed rock from the C. M. Marshal quarry was referred to the street com mittee with power to settle. Several bills of the Rome Gas Co., were referred to the gas and light department with power to act. Yards Second Ave. R LAMP THROWER Causes The Destruction Os Dawson City AN ENRAGED WOMAM Throws Lighted Lamp And Burns Half Million |n Property Skaguay. Alaska. Nov. 15. (via Victoria, B, C., Nov. 15). —Re- turning arriving in this city today bring the news that the city of Dawson has been visited by a $500,000 fire in which forty buildings were burned, including the new pnstolhce building and some of the best buildings in th*- city with mt a dol’ar o f insurance on anything. The fire took plain on 'h u morns ing of Oc'. 16 It started in he Wreer, Tree saloon as the r< suit of a row between two women of the own. H-lie Mitchell threw a light ed lamp at another woman. The lamp broke, the oil spread and in a few seconds the building was on fire. The fire started a 7 5. 20 ?.*m. The fir • of a year ago was earned by the same woman who threw a lamp at a man with whom she had a quarrel . A month ago she tried to burn her owu place on Third avenue in Dawson by throwing a lamp at a woman, and nearlv caused a conflagration by agaia losing and wielding another lighted lamp. At the time the police going sounded the tire alarm a light wind was blowing down the Yukon, sod the people saw at once that it would require quick work to save the town from total destruction.
