9 Cotnpaied with the election of

tdin some places and lost in

9 the result is not surprising when I

These questions were forced
into the background by the dec

be faced again as soon as peace
is restored. The Chicago plat

questions. That platform has
®ot been abandoned by those
who indorsed it in 1896. It will
be reaffirmed in 1900 because it

152 FEET IN SIR
And Stands Calmly Surveying
the Banterers Below.
Newark, N. J., Nov. 16.
Newark has a “steeple Jack”
whose daring will not hereafter
be questioned. His name ia Lou
is Toerk. Last week lie under
took the task of slating the tower
of Seton Hall College at South
Orange. The roof of the college
building is 95 fset above the
ground ; above it rises a tower
50 feet in height, and on the
top of the tower a cross whose
tip is 152 feet in the air. As
there was no wind yesterday af
ternoon Toerk decided to gilde
the cross. As he worked a crowd
of college youths watched him
from bq,low.
“You daren’t stand on the
cross I” shouted one.
Louis laid his brush on his
paint pot and climbed to the
cross-piece of the cross and stood
erect on it.
Then, to the amazement of
the lads below he placed one
foot on the tip of the upright of
the cross and then the other
and stood sti aight as an arrow.
A breath of wind would have
been fatal. When he let himself
down again safely to the improv
ised shelf on which be was
working there was a great out
burst of che®rs.
election, he said :
“A light vote was cast in Ne
braska but the fusionists have
elected the entire state ticket
and carried the same congres
sional districts that they carried
in 1896. If Senator Allen is de
feated for re-election it will be
becaute senators are elected by
legislators instead of by the peo
ple. .
•‘lf a Republican senator is
chosen by the new legislature
he will go to Washington to rep
resent a minority of the people
of the state and to thwart the
will of tne majority.”

FRfIJYG’S CHANGED FRONT
Gives the Dreyfusites Ground
For Hope.
Paris, Nov. 16 — Tlij court of
cassation has informed the min
ister of thecolonits, M. Guillain
that it has decided that Dreyfus
be informed by telegraph that
the revision proceedings have
commenced and that he prepare
his defense.
The minister of the colonics
has received a cable dispatch
saying that Dreyfus is in good
health.
The decision of the court of
cassation to inform xhe prisoner
that the revision proceedings
hava commenced and notifying
him to prepare his defense, is
very significant, as it has hither
to been generally admitted that
no innovation should be intro
duced in the Dreyfus proceed
ings. ,
Questions will now be drafted
and posted to Dreyfus, who will
formulate his replies.
'The Cour rier du Soir says
that M. Cavaignac, former min
ister of war, and. M. Deroulede,
one of the most violent op. on—
ents of the Dreyfus rev: i ••>.
called upon the premier. M,
Dupuy, today, an I asked -L :n
not to execute the decision of
the court of cassation to notify
Dreyfus to prepare his defense.
M. Dupuy refused to comply
with their request, whereupon
they threatened to make an in
terpellation in the chamber.
The Courrier du Soir adds :
“The court of cassation has
decided in principle to demand
the production of th® secret dos
sier, though the formal steps
have not been taken.’
Information as to the decision
of the court of cessation ought
to reach Dreyfus, on the Isle du
Diable, within two days.
When the news was imparted
to Madame Dreyfui she was so
overcome with joy that she was
unable to utter a word.
