Huns Away From Queenstcn
After Live’y Times.
Queenstown, Nov. 21.— Captain
Johnston, of the British steamer
Briardene, had a lively time yes
terday in this harbor, In the fore
noon the Briardene was seizad for
debt, acd a bailiff was sent on
board.
Johnson decided to run away,
bailiff and all. The pilot on board
refused to navigate the ship out of
port, with the result that Johnston
tried to de it himself, but he only
succeeded in grounding on a bar.
In two hours he got off the shal
lows. and, outrunning the steam
pinnace, which was sent to cap
ture him, be got safely away.

having come from New Y->rk city,
where he arrived Monday from
Nicaragua.
He left thereabout two weeks
ago on a steamer bound for New
York, bu which s'opj ed at Port
Limon, Costa Rica, an infect d
port.

until the time of his regi-t ration
at the hotel here on W -dnesday

giatering he went out and was
brough' back unconscious in the
afternoon.
The case was believed to b» an
ordinary “drunk,” and the man
not disturbed until earlv Friday
morning, whan an inmate of a
neighboring room heard a noise
from the room occupied by Miller
and a physician was summoned.
The patient died in the after
noon, without recovern .; consci
cuauess.

which Dr. Woodward, th- District

question as to the uatar* of the
disease. The body was trapped
in an antiseptic sheet ami place I
in a coffin filled with quicklime
for burial.
After Mr. Miller’s death a let
ter resebsd the hotel addierfed to
him. It was from a coino .nion
who had been with him the
way irom Nicaragua and showed
that Miller had been quite ill on
the steamer, and that the writer es
the letter, then in Pittston, Pa.,
was at the time of writing, the
17th instant, himsalf suffering
from symptoms which, Dr. Wood"
waid says, to a well-informed
physician would appear suspic
ious.

case of sickness in Pittston.
Miller was employed by the
Nicaragua Canal Commission, and
came here by order of the State
Department.
There is no occasion for alarm
here, as the cool weather and the
precautions taken render the like
lihcod of a spread of the disease
very remote.

WRECK IN OHIO.
Toledo, 0., Nov . 21.—A fast
passenger train on the Cincin
nati, Hamilton and Dayton last
afternoon crashed into the rear
end of a freight near Toledo.
Two trainmen and one passen
ger were injured. The engineer
and fireman escaped by jump
ing.
OSTRICH KILLED
Jacksonville, Fla , Nov 21. —
One of the big ostriches brough’
here recently broke its leg today
and had to be killed. It kicked at
a i.egro walking near it, and its
foot got caught in a wire fmee,
throwing the bird down and snap
ping oft its leg like a pipestem.

by severe storms. Many villages
