From Bingej •on - the - Rhine comes a story that is geod enough to be true. A citizen there was arrested for less msjestie in ref- r ring to “that damn fool emperor.” U hen brought before the magis trate the man admitted that he had used the words in question, hut he explained that the lai guage had reference to the emperor of Austria. “Oh, now, you can’t play oft any such excuse as that on this court,” exclaimed the magistrate, “there is only one damn fool em peror. You go to jail for six months?’ o o o As a jokr> Mrs. Mary L. Abbott was nominated for the office of prosecuting attorney in Ogee aw county, Mich , and to her surprise she wi-s elected by a good majori ty. She says that she intends to lake and administer the office, but 'ha attorney-general of the state says that he will not permit her to take the oath until the supreme court has given permission. 000 Gold nuggets don’t grow on the trees in the Philippines, but ac cording to Dr. Aylma Hood, who has lived there, they have a tree there which is really more fruitful of good things. “From the cocoa nut tree,” says Dr. Hood, “the na tive gets bis food, wins, oil. vine gar, fuel, ropes, fishing lines and clothes. A properly planted grovo will yield 1200 an acre every year.” 000 There are six widely-known Ala bamians, namely, General Joo Wheeler, ex-Minister Hannie Tay lor, General Oates, Senator Mor gan, Senator Pettus and Liouten ant Hobson. Those men are well known in other stalos, some of thorn in other countries, and all six of them, friends and feilow oountrymon, are jingoes.—Birm ingham Age-Herald. 000 It is true that Southern cot too mills as a rule make money, but how do they do it? In the first place, the noaproductivo expense of a Southern mill is not near as high as it io in the North. Then thoy are most of thorn now mills, or noar'y so, and those that are not new (that is tho successful ones) have thrown out their old machin ery and put new in its place, v bile now at the North there arc a large number of cotton mills that are running maohiaery thirty-five and forty years old. It is not to be expected that New England mills that adhere to this policy can compete with the Southern mill. - Boston Journal of Commerce 000 The returns show that on elec tion day Texas elected thirteen Congpessman and kitted six men. The chances are that after the Congressmen hsve served a term or two T- xas will realize that it would have been a more satisfac tory as well as economical arrange ment if she had confined her elect ing and her killing to the same thirteen. 000 American reader* are often jimuied at the oddity of Chinase names. Undoubtedly Li Hung Change and Li P p Tai and Chy Long look Very funny to ( ur eyes, and we are apt to think that they are arranged in the same order and have the same significance as given names and surnames among our» selves —which is not the case. Per* haps it is only the way that w» print their names that arouses our mirth, the Chinese themselves do not print them so Suppose some of our own aames were printed thus: riba Ifter, Al Ger, Mack In Ley. Wsehiugti n, Nov. 22.—Senator Morgan, of Alabama, as i- well known, bat strong convictions on the subj“ct of the destiny of the United States. Ina recent inter view he favored the three follow ing propositions: That the Nicaraguan Canal should be built at once That expansion is a Democri tic principle, That a pacific cable should at once be built to the Hawaiian In lands. Senator Morgan said: “Such a eat al is necessary to our self-protection as a Nation. The long trip of the Oregon and the trip of the lowa and Oregeu, now on the water, have given the people and object lesson, and I be lieve fully 7b per cent and more of the people are now in favor of i s construction. It will cost less than 1100,000,000, but the question of cost will not uow figure in coneid ering it. The people will have it. Had it not been for Speaker Reed the Nicaraguan Canal bill would have pasoed the House last session, as it cculd have passed the Senate. The Speaker will scarcely be able to prevent it passing now, if not at the regular, then at an extra session, which naw seems prob able. ” Hawaii, Senator Morgan says, will, from the start, be a source of revenue to the country. “A ter ritorial form of government,” he added, “will bo provided for Hawaii by Cot grist this winter. The President will appoint a Gov ernor and several judicial officers, and our newly acquired possession in the Pacific will grow aad blos som into a State of which wo shall all be proud. But one thing should be dono at once. A cable line should be laid to the islands. Sev eral monopolies are now lying in wait to eonatruct ono, but I hope tho President will go ahead and build one at onco. ” rear. Verily, thio Nation is forg ing to the front. 000 There are some things about Eng land that are admirable, the most intense American naiist admit. For instance. When Christian Scientists are called in, in Ameri ca, to treat a helples? child, and it dies under their treajment there io some indignation, but nothing is dono.
