GOV. I ANDLEH’S ADVICE
Gov. Candler thinks the class
of proj erty whit h escapes the
taxing officer is usually “bonds,
stocks, and evidences of indebt
edness.”—Macon Telegraph.
Gov. Candler is right; there
are millions of dollars worth es
property bidden away in stocks
and bonds, notes, and other evi
dences of indebted!.ess which do
not appear upon the tax books.
Ihis is not true only of Georgia,
but of every state and of every
country. ’] his class of proj erty
is easily sequested. TL« million
aires are the great tax dodgers
_of_thejand. They possess a form
of property which can be hidden;
away, and it is hidden away,!
The poor man with the little
cottage has his holdings above
ground and they are easily as
sessed. All real estate owners
have to bear the brunt of taxa
tion ; but stocks and bonds,
notes, aud other evidences of
indebtedness are hidden in the
vaults of banks and trust com
panies so that no man knows
where they are even until this
I day. Gov. Candler is not a dem
agogue, but he has struck the
keynote of the tax trouble. If he
can uncover the vast amount of
wealth which the tax assessors
cannot reach he will confer a
favor upon the state and make
the tax books filled with plenty
and the treasury “burst out as
if filled with new wine.” The
state will watch the effects *f
Gov. Candler’s advice and see
whether the legislature is equal
to this great work. By all means
a law should be passed to re
establish boards of tax assessors
in this state. —Savannah Press
