Chicago, Dec. 24—On a pub
lic street, standing within sight
a hundred awe stricken peo
two men fought a duel and
was kill'd. The victim was
detective Dennis F. Riley, of
Chicago A Northwestern
Railway. The man who killed
him is Joseph A. Mayer, of
Pleasant Plain, Wis.
Some months ago the men had
a misunderstanding, which

Riley was watching his enemy
just as intently. He, teo, backed
away. With a flash he whipped

Mayer followed suit, and before
the crowd that had gathered
could interfere b®th men, stand
ing in the regulation attitude ol
duelists, were simultaneously
working the triggers of then
guns.
Riley dropped bis weapon,
threw up his hands and with a
groan sank to the sidewalk.
Walking toward the prostrate
form Mayer fired one more shot
When tie police arrived he was
standing, smoking revolver in
hand, ovor the motionless form
of his vic'dm. Riley was dead. |
Then the crowd pressed for
ward and gathered about the
murderer. Anyone could have
prevented the tragedy, but the
men in the throng appeared
speechless with terror.
Without protesting, Mayer]

was loaded with harmless blank,
cartridges. :
Mayer admits having killed]
Miley, but claims he acted in;
