Bo 1 hid thia heart in a lily, When the dawn began to break— In a beautiful water lily— That grew beside the lake. Yes, down on a snowy p’llow, In acra He war.n »-i i deep I laid the little fondling, , And a ripple rocked it to sleep— The dawn came up with blushes And shook from her gown the dew , And 1 beard th* song of the sky lark As into the clouds he flew. But the heart dreamed on in the lily, And I went at the close of day • i And fou> d that my little treasure Had chilled wit h the foam and spray— So I warmed it upon my bosoa. Then cradled it back on the wave; But I feared that the little offspring Was doomed to a watery grave. So I watched till the daylight vanished Through the sunsetspurpie bars; Till tto night climbed over the willow’s And lit up the moon and stars— I thougt I heard a feotstcp— And low in ti e weeds aid grass I crouched, that there unnoticed, I might behold him pass. He came in his manly beauty, And b.ight as the tire flies That illrw'uaies the waving rushes, I saw his glowing eyes. He kneeled on the mossy margin— I counted ti e 'lily’s there- Two buds and a creau y blossom Were in his hands so fair, Anot er was d.aw a from the water And pushing tha reeds apart, I saw 'iwjb the very lily— Where in I had hid the heart, Did he pin it upon his coat, Resting so shily in its place?
