The Hustler of Rome revers the old heroes who wore the grey as much as any one, but with Ger don asd Colquitt in the United States senate, we think a halt ought to be called. These men were gallant soldiers, but as statesmen they ’ere a failure—Wbv should Democracy turn over the 8 ate gov ernment to another, and a veteran who has not even been fighting for Democracy It is wrong and the times are too hard for the people to submit to ouch folly. THEY ARE NESPKTAfK- There is not a paper in Georgia which, to date, has said anything “os tracising Coafederate soldiers. ” The editors of Georgia never thought o* such a thing. Many of the papers however have been fearless enough, however to say that as deaiocrata, they oppose a man who hae nothing to show for 30 years bui a war re cord. To this manly and fearless stand the Brunswick Tin 03 Adver tiser says: There is ao room in Georgia for a sentiment that proposes to osh arise ex-Confederate soldiers from office holding. It seems to lie the tactics of the Evans boomers to put the Atkinson papers ot the defensive before the public—but they can't The Democ racv of Georgia backs the democratic press aad Atkinsoa men are aggress ive all along the line. They will win too, *aaark that prediction. ’’ AMONG THE PRINCES. The Savannah Press aaye: that “people who want the earth eheuld remember that they will get it in due eeasan.” —o— —of Hale’s Weekly makes this predictien on the Hawaiian affair: If Queen Lil stands up until she gets a throne to sit on she will have corns en her heels as big as horse-chestnuts. —o — Some of the Georgia papers are objecting to war-earned titles in our politics, —Brunswick Times Advertiser. There you are wrong. There is perhaps, not a paper in Georgia but that honors the heroes who fought under the stars and bars. But the time has come, when the condition of our country demand* men who have something besides war reeords, and the level headed editors of the state have courage enough to face the danger, though they have to stem the tide of sen i nient <m wh ch, the policy people, Boat. I 0 According to the papers there is still a scarcity cf water in south west Georgia It would be a sad catastrophe if Rainey, of the Daw sou News, w’b forced te resume the unlimited coinage of beer —Atlanta Journal. —o— John Cain has not been studying over the stocks and bond situation for nothing. Here’s the way he takes in the Chattooga News: In a sermon at the Centenary church, Chattanooga last Sunday Bev. George R. Stuart said he had rather be a stockholder in hell than a theatre, and gave as a rea son that hell “is a necessary and benevolent institution.*’ Well per haps it is, but we want stock in something that we can let go of when w« git tired. You bet I It is claimed that Bismark is a n editor. Well, he‘s just the, (barring editor Byrd) to raise the ‘’devil” Augusta News. Barring nothing! Maj be the other boys are busy keepidg that “dark horse” tied out. Let them rest a few days and they will be all the better when they come iu and join the unterified and match on to victory with Atkinson in the lead. —o — The Rome Hustlbb says: “The Ev ans so-called boom will bust. Mark that prediction.” It might if it was a boom, but its a regular and leg; imate uprising of the people in favor ot the great General. —Augusta News, Sinee when, “did the psople be come denizens of Augusta and Atlan ta? We admire the consistency of the News in opposing the man who defeat ed little Billy Flemming, with hands down. All the same the Evans boom will bust and Atkinson will be Geor gia’s next Governor. Atlanta wants the earth. If there is a new institution of anytkind to be established, Atlanta wants it, if a convention or meeting of any kind is to be held, Atlanta wants it; if a fair or an exposition is to be held, Atlanta wants it regardless of the rights or claims of others; if a United States Senator is to be elect ed, they want him; if another one is to lie elected, they want him ; when the time of the present one expires, they want to fill the places; if a gov ernor is to bo elected, they want to furnish the man. They want the earth polished up bright with a jas per wall around it. There is no mod esty about Atlanta We doubt if there has been a blush upon tho cheek of a native citizen of Atlanta in 20 years. —Hales Weekly > . 1 111 *■ — 1 In the Redwine trial now going on in Atlanta, the effort of Capt. Marry Jackson to shield the name of his dead son, Tom Cobb Jackson was most natural, Tho evidence showed that Tom Cobb Jackson, at the time of the snieide, waa only 24 and that Redwine was 33. CapV Jackson would load the pnblic to believe that Redwine lod his boy astray, and yet the evidence showed that es $103,000 shortage at the Gate City National bank Tom Cobb Jaekson get about $90,000 through Red wino. Why should Redwine furnish that much money to lead any man astray? Governor Atkinson and General Evans will live en the same street next year. This ought to be con soling 10 General Evans, who eomes out of the gloom of thirty years inactivity in the democratic party and wants to hug Mr. Atkin son all over his platform. Atkinson will make General Evans a right respectable neighbor and, serious ly speaking, will help the genera to tone up Peachtree Street, purty considerable, in a moral way. THE GO VIRNRRSHIP We have not a word to r»y against General Evans as a man ; we have not a word to say againn: him as a eoldier. As a man he ha<* been honored in the grand call he has aerved ao well ; as a ssldier he was h mored for services and his bravery. We do Bay, however, that General Evans has done nothing for his people and his State in u political way that entitles him to come is and ask for the highest position within the gift of the peo ple. General Gordon has been honored ; General Colquit has been honored and other brave sjldiers have been honored. Why? Look over the political history of Geor gia for the last thirty years and you will find their names conspic uous for noble work done while the name of General Evans is conspicuous by its absence. Take the campaign of 1892; call ever the names es those who wore in the battle fighting for home aad country as never men fought be fore and tell us where the name of Evans appears. You can And the name of Gordon ; you can find the name of Bacon; you can find the name of Robertson, you can find the name of Clay, Atkinson, James and hundreds of other Ceor gianp, but the name of Evans, never Now that the fight is woe the name of Evans appears all over the State asking that the men who saved Georgia from political ruin ho relegated to the rear and that he be made governor. We are of those who believe that the horse should have the fodder that pulls the plough. General Evans is not entitled to the governorship of Georgia.— Hale’s Weeklv. AROUND IN GEORGIA. The heavy default of Treasurer Nelson, of the city of Brunswick, falls hard on the place, following the dis astrous epidemic, but it is queer that the matter has been perm tted to run along so long after it was known The shortage has been whispered about the State for months, and it seems to have been perfectly well understood in Brunswick, while Nel son was going about the city uimo lestod.
