A ITord i About Thmntany. • I New York, Jan . 17—It is not | possible to make any estimate of the , value of contributions, both of mon ey and provisions and clothing, which those are active in dispensing help have received since the begin ning of the winter The number of organizations, tem porary, permanent, religious and sec tarian which are in the work of alle viating the distress is bo great that anything like a canvass of them, so as to obtain a detailed statement >f what they are doing would require tard work extended over many days. One of those who are interested in hese charitable doings said this morning that he presumed that al ready the value Os the cotribution.s was considerably over a million dol ms. Many private subscriptions iave been received iron’ rich men. >f which the public wdl never knew in)thing. Much of the work of re lief is conducted secretly. Ihe St. Vincent de Paul Society has received several large subscrip lions, and is doing very thorough work in relieving destitute members >f the Catholic Church of their dis tress. The commimittee appointed by President Seth Low’, which contains meh persons as Cornelius A’ander bilt, General Horace Porte - , M. C .D. Borden, Pierpont Morgan aud oth ers, the aggregate wealth of the com mittee being probably more than two hundred millions of dollars, has in stituted a very thorough but necessa ily a somewhat secret method of currying relief to the poor. The city its self will probably offer some pub lic work, although there seems to be some political reason for delay. If it wan a month before election L'amany would have plenty of em ployment for thousands of laborers. One of the most pitiful sights has been the daily congregation of per sons in front of the building formerly iccupied bv the Herald to receive second-hand clothing, which ha 8 been sent to the building in very great quantities. Many of these people ippear to have been compelled to make such public acknowledgements >f their distress only by the barest necessities, and it has caused some thing of tender sympathy to go forth From the rushing throng ou Broad- way to these unfortunate persons who stand patiently waiting their turn, shivering iu the cold, many of them seemingly clad iu garments fit >nlv to be worn upon a simmer day. Politics continue to L j tceptiou dly active for this season of the year. Senator EI ward Murphy is quoted here today as saying: If Gov ernor Flower desires a renominatiom for Governor he can have it. Bourke Cockran adds to this the statement: “There is no way of netting rid of Flower.’’ As the sit uation stands now he is certainly the strongest man the democrats of New York can nominate for governor next fall. There can nurdiy be any doubt that the gov xrnor would like a renomination, but there may be found a few ob jections here and there to the proposition that he is the strong est man the party can put up. It he is to be renominated, Lieuten ant-Governor Sheehan will also be likely t.< strive for a similar compliment, and on this a caustic observer says: “The probability that Governor Flower can drop Mr. Sheehan is small. The certain ty that he cannot carry him is absolute. The agitation against present police methods and disci pline is producing many curious effects besides closing up the places of ill-repute,the pool-rooms and the gambling-houses. Last Sunday, for ißstance*. was what is styled a “dry” day in uany sections, much to the incon f«nience and disgust of thirsty loul* and people who regard the unber contents of “the growler” ust as necessary a part of their neals as others do their tea, mi k >gee>.and other chjeripg tippjt, r JOB PBWW LF YOU NEED Bill Heads, Letter Heads, Note Hea s, Statements, Envelopes, Circulars, Programs, Posters, Dodgers, Pamphlets, M inutes, Cards, Tickets OR ANYTHING FROM A VISITING CARD TO A 3-SIIFET POSTER, YOU SAVE MONEY By Getting Estimates From the SHANKLIN PRINTING HOUSE.
