New Orleans, Feb 20. j) ttn Hustlbb of Rome :—Every j BV J have s»id that I would send you a letter, but my time has flown on the flower scented air, and been consumed in pastimes as fragrant, and enticing as the blooms of this quaint old city. Even now from my window case- K ont I can s p e °n the lawn th* <oiden fruit of the orange and Japanese pium treer while thr aroma of hundreds of roses and orange blossoms make life a de- Kght. To wander in this lavely garden beneath a sky of trapical sunshine to pluck violets, heliotrope, jasa mines and roses day after day is worth the trip down here. i The place lam visiting is a typ ical Southern home, a large white house with greeu blinds, and luxu ‘riant vines clambering about its sidei. My room >« on the first floor and I sleep in a beautiful bed stead with a canopy of blu« satin, and white lace. I tell this because I am so plaased, so you must par don me if I grow to speak of my self toe often. In addition to their attraction* just thi' kof feeding upon great white heads of lettucce and ripe tomatsM, radishes, fresh oysters, crabs and fish every ineal, to say nothing»f the fruit, and black cof fee servedonly the French can. Oh! lain enthusiastic about New Orhans, it is the place of manifold wonders and beauties; a great thrcb- ing, generous heart loving all mankind. The Southern ardor of a tropic dime da«h< d with the impulse and vivacity of the true Gaul makes a character un surpassed for chivalry, generosity, affection aud hospitality. All day the merry m akers thronged the streets, even littl* children and babiea were in gala attire, while from window, aud vine, covered balcony streamed flags and bunting bearing hie majesty’s colors, purple, yellow and green My young hopeful joined a crowd of children eut in this neighborhood wore* oambriedrees of the above mentioned hues, and a pink mask aud had as she ssid “a splendid time” Such a jolly happy set of people no rudeness, jostling, pushing, for loud talklug did I see all day, when the crowd was largest. Late that night, or I should say, early that morning for it was near ly day before we could leave the festivities, coming home on the street car every body was kind and jolly, trying to see how very good they could be about giving seats to the ladies, for there was of course a great crowd. On the car were ssveral who still wore their Carnival suits some of them carried musical in struments, and played upon them for the benefit of the passengers, The King of the Carnival pre sented his Queen with a diamond necklace. All es the costumes for the parades were made in Paris. I have not told half I know. Next time I must mention the French Opera the Orphan's home, and some other attractions-and institu tions. Gar McKinley es Ohio Playing for the Next Replica■ Nominatiou I«r President. ” New York, Feb. 20—Those whe observe politicial movements in New York outside the regular par ty lines attach much importance to the endeavors now making to bring Henry George forward as a candidate for the mayoralty. It is no secret that for weeks past the labor men have been ar ranging te become a recognised factor in the impending political campaign and while Mr. George has remained aloof from all de monstrations of apolitical nature he found it impossible to restrain a recent audience wh.ch hailed him as a mayoralty candidate and cheered him widly. There are some democratic po liticians who affect to consider the George movement among the la bor men as a disguised ef fort on the part of the republicans to help their own chances in the coming contest. No impression cauld be more' erroneous. It is cone ided even bv '' • if the democrats that republican prospects is New York have never been more bright but Henry j George has no connection with re- r publican prospects. If Henry Georg 1 is brought for ward at all i f will be amply as the resuslt-of an independaut move ment. The arrival of G r, v ArnAr McKin- f iey in the city has set the Presi dential boomers talking, it is hipted tha<: from now on the re publican party’s chief exponent of of the doctrine of a protective tariff wit! be seen frequency in public places. He is to make a completecircuit of the country during the next eighteen months, it is said, and the next stand is Chicago, where the Governor will speak at th« Union League ditaer on Washington’s Birthday. The Governor declined to dis cuss the subject of republican Presidential nominees, but it is stated as a fact that the Govern or is a candidate fortlie nomina tion. H’s friends expect him to have the Ohio delegation solid, owing to the alleged complaisance of ex overnor Foraker and the faction he leads, and his interests in the Republican National Committee will be looked after by the execq live member from Ohio, Mr, Hahn, A B.McARVER&Ca.
