Flaming is pouring in hard shot in a soft place in the guber natorial race Possibly Mr, Atkinson knows this. —Augusta Herald. If we remember correctly, one W.H Fleming of the county of Richmond was deft uted by Mr. Atkinson, for speaker of t lie last H mse of of Rep r eseutives. If we remember correctly, the de feat, was more than a defeat, it was a rout. If we remember correctly, Speaker Atkinsoa made Mr. Fleming chair man of tLe Committee on Priviledges and Elections, besides putting him on various other committees. ' If we remember correctly, later on when Judge Ht’l resigned his seat jn the house of Representatives speak er Atkinson appointed Mr. Fleming cl,a r nan of.the Finance committee. If these are facts, then will the Au gusta Herald please tell us what grievance its pet —Bill Fleming the talker, has against Mr. Atkinson, who was the choice of the people for speak er and who made a most distinguish ed officer. Did Mr Atkinson make a mistake in honering the gentleman from Au gusta? Is the man from Augusta a gentleman or a sore head, is he a democrat or a diseppointed office seeker enroute Jto the Third Party. "But of course Bill Fleming tawks he kan’t heppit—.” The Guano Schooners have be gun to sail from this port. WHO IS THE "DARK HORSE” Says the Columbus Evening Ledger: The Statesboro Star one of the many Georgia Weeklies which have the name of Hau. W. Y. Atkinson for governor, at its mast head declares that Bullock county is au Atkinson strong hold. It also has the following concern ing the gubernatorial race: They say Gon, Evan’s friends up about Rome, are getting awfully ' frightened, and are threatening to ' trot out a dark horse. It has not as yet been settled on who this third entry will be, but iu all prob ability he will be either Tom Watson or Seal) Wright, Let him come Atkinson can beat the whole gang. MACON'S MUD SLINSER McDuffie Journal truly eays: "The friends of Mr. AtKinsjm^ ve think, are acting unwisely i Q J^i s i u <r the objection to GeneralEEying. ing f} ia f he is a preacher, am|^j ming thftt he should i eceixj^/^special consid eration on acjjr )(111 t o f jjjg re cord as a C onfedeij^£^ veteran. —Mat or Ne ws. ,**ues the Macon News believe the 1 above a fair blow above the belt? 1 Does the News hope by suc|i miss- ’ statements to stir dissention enough 1 among the veterans of Bibb and the 1 Christian voters of Maeon to carry its county for Evans? With due respect to all parties, we don't believe Rev. C. A. Evans would want votes won by such means. Let the News get out of the mud hole. .»■■ 11 1 l I «'■!*" AUGUSTA NEW S HARD PRESSED The Atkinson organs claim that the ' fact that a Baptist divine refused to support the gentleman, means noth- ' ing at all. No, nothing, except that the aspirant after gubernatorial hon ors got left.—Augusta News. And is this the diet Augusta's “Ev ans Boomers” are to feed upon until Richmond county acts? But perhaps it. is best for after the State conven tion the “Boomers” will have to eat crow or support Tom Watson along j with the said "divine” who happened i to be a democratic apostle. Poor Augusta!—Poor Bill Fleming! We pity their little 2x4 souls, if the above argument is the best they have in their shops. "They may recover, but we fear they will ntyjr look like anything again. ’ The Hustler of Rome extends ts deepest sympathy to Sam E. Whitmire in this, the hour of his sorrow. His father Mr, W C. Whitmire, after four in mths suf fering from injuries received iu a fall from a road cart, quietly breathed his last this forenoon. The funeral occurs tom<rrow morning at 10 o’clock when the remains will be laid to their long rest in the country church yard at Floyd Springs. .THE RACE FOR GOVERNOR . The Macon Telegraph is of the same opinion as the Ledger about the Evans boom' It says: “The truth is that the artificially blown up boom for Gen. Evans has about collapsed, and that At ki s>n s gaining raptdly in all parts of the state as men begin to consider the facts of the situation. This process is sure to continue,’’ —Columbus Eve ning Ledger. Hon. W. Y. Atkinson will have no trouble in securing the Wilcox coun ty delegation,—Rockdc’e Solid South Hon. W. While third paitjism was at feve heat during the last campaign W. Y, Atkinson was one of the strongest supporters of the Democratic party. He manfully rolled his sleeves up and met the leaders of the new party in joint debate, and literally deadened the new party wherever he landed. Several other j vhite men were present aud some of them were Seay meu but they did not vote with the colored brothers on this occasiau—preferring to waait and make the color -d brother vote with them on election day.
