Rome Tribune: Is there any reasonable argument that can be urged against General Evans’ can didacy for governor? Is he men tally morally or physically unfit for the office? Has he ever been disloyal to his people or to tbeinter ests cf Georgia? Has he ever fail ed to answer every call of duty in peace or war? —Rome Tribune. It is not that the people of the State love Gen. Evans lass but Mr- Atkinson more. It is a good idea to get into practice in asking ques tions. The Buchanan Messenger, an avowed supporter of Mr. Atkinson says that “it ib a foregone conclu sion that Gen. C A. Evans will be the next governor of Georgia. Per s >na!ly. we favor Mr Atkinson, but his chances for the place are now meagre—Brunswick Times. The above is going the rounds of the Boomerang sheets. The Ban ner Messenger has long since come out flatfooted for. The youug Geor gian and the Evans papers know it and yet they will use the above repudiated of its outhor, for eam paign literature —But then the Boomers are desperate. Mr. Atkinson has not yet retired. He must keep very late hour*.— Augusta News. Me do. And . Augusta may yet hear Richmond say ia the next convention: Mr. Atkinson here are six you can have them as ours. In Floyd county Evans will get seven votes to Atkinson's one. That is about the proportion in Richmond. —Augusta Hearld . Last night while Rev. M. C’ McCurdy col. of Timbuctoo, was addressing the “Seay Lime Kill Klub’’ on the issues of the hour, his funeral oration was interrupted by noise caused by men arranging the terms of a bet, in the rear of the hall. The bet was made and thu Rev, McCurdy finished the dis course. The colored pastor, should emulate the example of his white ministerial brothers. Keep out of ward politics—except to vote. ANOTHER ATKINSON PAPER. Hitherto we have said very lit tle concerning the gubernatorial question because, in the first place we thought we had plenty of time, and in the second place, the can didates are so well matched in in tellectual gifts and possibly in personal popularity, that we haw feund it somewhat difficult to choose between the two. But it appears that an impression has gono abroad that we favored Gen . Evan‘s candidacy. This is a mis take which we hasten to correct As a brave Confederate ve’eran, statesman and Christian gentle man, Gen. Evans has our wannest admiratien and respect, but as b - twesn him and Col. Atkinson for the governorship, ,ve shall advo cate the candidacy of the latter, feeling satisfied that he poasessuß every manifestation to make a safe and efficient executive. He is a bright, learned and eloquentyouug statesman, and has rendered praise worthy service to Georgia and the party. His ambition to be made governor is an honorable one, and we see no reason why it should be defered. Sheuld he be elected he would bring to the ©ffice intelli gence, energy, ability and loyalty to party principles.—Cochran Tel egram, Macon News and other boom erang sheets please change the Telegram from Evans to Atkinson on your lists. ON A LOW PLANE. The Savannah Dispatch says that the Evans papers have pitch ed a portion of their campaign on a low plane. It comments on the great rumpus raised about a letter written by Mr, Atkinson to a Bap list minister and says: The Evans papers have made a great row about the letter Mr. At kinson wrote to a Baptist minis ter asking for support inhisguber uatorial candidacy, In their wild haste to injure Mr. Atkinson thesß editors have overlooked the fact that Gen. Evans has written Ut ters which could be produced in print if the editors of the Atkin son papers were disposed to con duct the campaign on such a low plane. But Mr. Aik inson’s supporters, though thpy have these letters m their possession, have i o reason to reeort to the methods adopted by the opposition. Their candidate stands before the p< ople of lis state with an unblemished record of great work for democracy, and can afford to lot the other side throw as much mud as it pleases. More will stick to the hands es those who attempt to oast it than will cling to Mr. .Atkinson.— Athens Banner. NATIONAL POLITICS.
