Clement A- Evans bad Metier return to his ministeri al duties while he may; he had better take the advice es hie friend jj. White es Rockdale county and retire from politics. Gen. Evans is himself wearing that worried look which his chos en I’rituds took with them when they went to meet the Atkinson committee to fixup th* joint dis cussion. He is not only on th* <!• feneive in consequence of the back down from the j >iut debate, but as one of his most ardent support ers put it, he is actually on the ru i. Since Saturday’s eveut there has b r 'n more political talk than at any other time since the an Bouucemeuts of Ihe two candi dates. The contest in the meeting of the slate committee over the setting ot the date for the convention, in which the Evans side was fairly whipped out, after the line bad been squarely drawn, has furnished its full ehare of significant talk, but the most inter esting things caid frem an Atkinson point 01 view are about the j int de bate farce palmed off by Gen. Evans* friends. The followers of tbe gallant old num who fought bo bravely in the troubles of 82 are sorely disap pointed to see him show the white leather ir a single hand combat on the slump. Wlif n Colonel Atkinson invited Gen Evans to a joint discussion before ttie people he was particular to say that the proposition contemplated a joint canvass of the state, and' when this invitation was accepted he fully ex pected it to to fulfilled. General Ev ans'fnAuds were satisfied that he wci.iu bear himself well in meeting Colonel Atsinson and were not pre- P u ! i a backdown .
