Are you fond of books? If you
Ere I think this article will inter
cat you very much.
The question has often passed
through my mind that if all the
books in ths world were taken
away from me, what six or even
doz ‘fi would I select? I have
never been able to fix upon any
six yet. As fast as I w>uld write
one down on my list, I would
find ar >ther I thought better.
The thing absorbed my mind so
that at last determined to ask six
ladies and six gentlemen of Rome
who were known to be close stud*
euts. Five ladies and three gentle
men out of the dozen were kind
enough to favor me with a reply,
and the result is given below. At
a matter of course, every one
would take the Bibl* as one of th*
books and those who did not in
close itin their list stated that they
were under the impression that I
did not intend for it to be consid
ered in the lot. I failed to sta‘e
sue.* in my notes and this is why
it does not appear in all replies.
First I will give the ladies Mrs.
J. A. Gammon says these books
would be her greatest comfort and
telle why.
1 “Lewis 4 Biographical History
of Philoiophy —” To remind us of
the efforts of the human mind
towards finding truth.
2. 4 ‘Qu‘ei Victoria's 44 “Life of
Prince Consort—” For a guide to
wards a sensible and elevating
conduct of home affairs the sam ft
in palace as cottage,
3. ‘'Emersons Essays— ’’ To
give one the consolation of mind
and soul braced in calmness
poised in strength for the inevit
able.
4 . “Lucille” by Owen Merideth
—For the wit the foinance the
poetry of the 19ih Century.
5. “Ivanhoe” by Walter Scott —
for beauties of all kind.
6. “Beatrice” Rider Haggard.
To teach us that error can be re
deemed by strength of will ai;d
death.
P. S, Beatrice may be supple
mented with Adam Bede—-whose
error runs its course to misery and
< death And Wm Paysons htm-ly
wit is always a refreshment.
Miss Eleanor Churchill Gibbs
merely makes the list; but any
comment is unnecessary as its in
deed a wise selection:
1 . The Bible.
2. Worcesters Dictionary.
I i'ttanica,
4' Homer.
5. Shakespeare.
6 Browing.
Mrs, R. D. Hughes says that
there are no six books that would
sut sfy her, but she sends her six
favorites:
1. The Bible,
2. Ben Hur,
3. Les Miserables.
4 D ivid Copperfired<
5. Hamlet.
6. Autocrat of theßeak ;ast Table.
Airs. M. A. Nevin’s differs from
all the otn»T 3 iu P oiut of havin g a
book on the cu.’jiary art—the
great civilizer of the world. Owen
truly says:
“We may lire without poetry, muflc
and art:
We may live without conscience
and live without heart,
We may live without friends, we
may live without beoks;
“But civilized man cannot live
without ceoks! - ’
1 “Lucille,” by Owen Msrideth
2 “Sacra Privata,” by Bishop
Wilson.
3 “History of the United States’
by Alexander H. Stephens.
4 “Shakespeai’s works” by Wil
liam Shakespeare.
5 Unabridged Dictionary by I
Webster.
6 Dixie Ceok-book.
Mrs. A. B. S. Moseley considers
it a great undertaking. “Looking
backward, memory recalls many
beautiful gems, that linger in the
mind like strains of an exquisite
melody, and to reject one of them
seems like turning ones back on a
: dear and familiar friend.”
“With the premise that you do
not include the Bible. I would
say.
1 “Shakespeare for the study of

2 “An Apocalypse of L’fe” ly

5 “Heart of Midlothian,” by
Walter Scott. As a lesson of truth
love and self-saerifice.
5. Age of taba, For it is the
golden key that unlocks the beau
ties of our choicest literature, that
would otherwise pass into oblivion
unappreciated, because uncompre

Now for the gentlemen. Mr.
Junius F. Hillyer thinks this last

Prof. J. C. Harris very justly
says that All knowledge is valua
ble and relative merits of the books
certain it cannot be discussed
within the limits named. Any ob*
of the mathematics or natural
sciences or “cosmic" philosophies
any treatise on any department of
law. medicine, theology or date
craft is a book in the field of lit
erature.” And when we reckon in
addition the vast number of histo
ries and essay? and the expression
of man’s creative imagination ip
noetry and romappg, music and
art, now in book forni, H be
seen bow utterly hopeless is the
task you have set for me, I will
say, however, that in three books.
1 The Bible,
2 The Encyclopedia Brittanica,
3 Unabridged Dictionary,
One could find more knowledge

and instructive list it you will

who have read comprehensibly, i*

of literature.
