Running for rflie* is a v«ry ax- i pensive busim-s®, ns the candidate soon finds, if he does not know it before hand . Among the incidents which the average caadidde liter ally holds vHt to the voters are ci gars, and very cheap cigars they usually are. They urv generally “twofere," and very bad. indeed. An election took place some years ago in Houston, and among tbe cendiilairß wasCoi. Percy Yer gor. He wae elected, and meeting Uncle one of hie cofoted constituents, about a week after the election, he tends the venera bly darky a-oigar, To Co 1 . Yerg j r's surprise Uncle M use drew back and assuming a* hostile altitude said in an excited manner: “Don t yer gtb me no luoah «b d»in cigars. Colt Yergw, or. I’E'da t yer on de spot, pge sixty yeaes old, but d« man wat pokes a.uy mbah cb dem cigars at dis old uiggah has got to shack himsef and hab it out, for Pss gwiuter chaw his neck." Why, Mose, you surprise me!" “Dem cigars s.prised me, too. 1 had only used fr e ob'em . I’m keepin' ds rest to pizen rats wid." Why, you must have gotten hold of a bad box. “ "I got in a bail Lox, sure enough, when I got dem cigare. I lit «e fust one when 1 got home uat night. 1 hadn't tuck more than two puts when de ole woman m’de a face like she smelt eumfin and said, ‘Foah God, dat dog been rolliwg in a dead boss or some udder car rion, Dat dog can't stay in dis house, and she up wid de broom slick and whacked de house dog, old Tige, and druv him oufen de h 'use. Kunnel, it m'?s‘ broke n.y heart, because I lubbtd d.t dog. I knowed all de time by de tas'e in my mouf it vius de highly fla vored cigar, and not the dog, wha: didn't smell fresh, but I didn't let on bekase I'se been hit too off*!' already by de broom stick my sell, xud I would just as lief ole Tigs should hab it, eben es he is a good dog and hasn't got no defensive ha> its," ‘‘Dey's all alike. De only place whar dat brand of cigars kin be smoked widest breedin' an epi demic is ou de top cb a high mountain, when a hurricane if blow in'4oo or 500 miles a minit, but.dat ain't de brand of cigars to use in consolidatin' de colored veto ob Houston," "I am afraid the rival candidate put up those cigars on me to de privs me of your influence, ‘ fc said Colonel Yerger, "It looks like it.' “And it smelt like it, too. Dh nex time I lit one ob dem cigars de ole woman came mighty nigh fannin' de air wid de remains ob de youngest boy, Abe Linkum. Bhe said he had been puttiu fed ders and old rags in de stove to make her snetze. After dat I gub up smokin' in de family to sa' e Gcost ob a funeral.-* ‘ Well, Uncle Mose, lam real! ' sorry ." “De nex time I enjoyed one ob dem cigars was at de meetin' ob de Dark Rising Sons of Liberty,', continued Uncle Mos_e. “I s pose dar wus sich a perfume in dat club roem, w hen about forty excitable uiggahs got to talkin' politics and perspirin' dat nebody wus go.ng to single out de smell ob my I lit de cigar and took one draw. Jess as soon as I blowed out smoke everybody qait talkin', and dej all seemed to be huntiir for sumfin 1 . Jim Webs'.er spoke fust. Be said de gas am leakin'." Brudder Jones, de president ob de club, ‘lowed dat besides de gas, a skunk had crawl ed under de house and died data f tw days previous. I gave one moah~pwff, and i-t-wasn t long be fore forty pay eyes was a hangm' put, and all lo.kin' reproachful at me, and forty par ob colered nos trils was a workin* up and down Seberal members said dey had made udder engagements, and dey went out, but I reckon by de noise dey made outside, dey must hab throwed up dar engagements along wid de rest. Finally Brudder Jones said * 'Breddern ob de club, we all hjnor. and respect. Uucie Moih for his many good qualities, but we will hab to put him outen de elub for smokiu'dat cigar." ‘‘Did they put you out ot the club?" "Dey did, fer a fac*, and de wust oh it wus dat dey put me eut fru de winder, and de club reom is on de second floor. Dey drapt moah den twenty feet, and 1 broko two ribs by bittin' de yarf. G'way Kunnwl, don't talk to mo about dem cigars, or 1 chaws yer neck. ‘ By this time the old d».rk»«y had became so excited that Colonel Yerger concluded it was best to beat a retreat.—Texas Shifting*. B )B INGERSOLL’S KINDNESS < ulonel Ingersoll ha§ the kindest of hearts tow. r Is all mankind. Only a idays ago a newspaper man tohl ma a characteristic story about him . This newspaper man f und hitnsell in New York ou? Xt elbow, nibble to get work, and unwilling, of course, to ask alms, In Lis straits it occured to him to go and see Coldne} Ingeieoll, although he wae quite sure that the colonel would not remember the sin gle occasicn when they had met. "Well, what can I do for you, young man?” said the colonel, coming right to the point. "I am a newspaper reporter and want you to give me an interview.” "On what subject?'’ “Any subject you please, sir.*' "For what paper?” ‘ For any paper that will buy it < f me. ” “Well, that's cqoI! Don't you know my time is valuable? 1 ' "Yes; but I am in a tight place. I am out of work; I don't know which way to turn. There is no market for what I write. There is always a mar ket for what you say. Talk to we twenty minutes and it will be $25 or $•0 in my pocket." "But I would rather give or lend you the money." ‘‘l couldn't take it as a gift, and I have no right to ask a loan, I want to sarn it and I think 1 am justified in asking charity to the extent of a few minutes of your time." “All right," was the cherry re joinder. ‘‘Fire away with your ques tions." The reporter "fired away" on the first topics that came into his, mind and soon had material which he made into copy salable to a syndicate for SIOO, Nor was Ingersoll’s good nature exhausted with a single inter view. Said my friend:' "I ate, drank and slept on Jngei>oll for a month, or until I got regular work, and whenever he gave me an interview he went over my notes and touched them up until the matter was in his best style. Ihats the sort of man In gersoll is." —Chicago Inter-Ocean THERE'S A DIFFERENCE IN SlZE between Dr. Fierce’s I’elldts and’/N every other pill. The Pellets are 55.. L Y smaller.
