James of Cartersville, Judge Branham showed that Mr. James was a traveling salesman and that he was absent m Mississippi, but that a subpoena had been left at his mether's home on March 28th. and that he had kept the wires hot between Rome and some po nt in Mississippi, trying to get Mr. James | here for the trial to lay. Judge Branham admitted how ever that his “wire-work” had in this branch of the ea»e, proven futile, Solicitor General Nunnally, in reply stated that the defence had made an effort at a continuance of this cass in last November on the grounds of the ab-scence of thi 8 same James (D) witness and be sides, that the defense at this form nad not made the prescribed ef ort, to have said witness here, for that effort to be sufficient grou nos Judg« Henry said that he did net care to hear from the state on tiirtt point, and called on Judge Maddox lor his argument on the other ground, viz: why the case should be continued on ac • count of Judge Maddox s ab scence. Judge Maddox then asked foi a coutiuuenca of the case to the tilth week of the present term of court, this was met by Col. Watt Harris of the state side. Col Harris argued that so for as witnesses w ere concerned that both sideo were ready, and that he and his clients were here at thier own expense and that Solicitor Nunal.y informed him that among the witnesses were many who lived out of the county and were here at heavy expense to the countv. Judge 11-nry, in passing on the case took occasin to say that it was the intention of the Law to hasten all this class of cases that the inocent might be vindicated at once and that Justice might be meted out to the ROME GEORGIA. Mrs, Stephen?, the wife of the murdered man, and paramour ®f the defendant is somewhere in the far North West and will not be present to testify. Tonight Mayor King and Coun cJmeu Printup, Mathis, Griffin, Williamson and Cornelius will step down and cut, and Mayor Moore with councilmen McArver Neel, Stoffragen, Harris and Me | Cass rey w ill take their seats . The council will then consist of Mayor John D. Moore, Couucilinen Sat terfield, McArver, McDonald, Neele McClure, Stoffragen, Wright, Har ris, Miller and McCaffrey, There is several little coincidents connected with the new council. For the fiiet time the First ward will be represented by two “Buds* 1 There will be four Mc’s in the eouneil and three “Billies*' The mayor is Secre tary and treasurer of a Building and Loan Association, while the council is composed «f three merchants two ’awyers one miller, one baker, one “m< d. cine man “ one mechanic aid one capitalist. It is doubtful if such a combination ever existed before. This calls to mind the councils of the past which The Hubiler after some little trouble has secured. The first Mayor after the war was James Noble who «erved in that ca pacity in 1865. In 1866 Dauiel S. Pi intap was mayor, and the following were his couacilmen, Jesse Lambutb, T, J. Pe ry, Samuel G.bbon-, J. H.Coopsr Sam Noble an 1 John M -Quinn - H. A Smith was Clerk. In 67-GB, Chas. H. Smith (Bill Arp) was mayor and Messrs Lam- buth, Perry, Jas. Noble Sr. D. M. Hood, J. W. Hooper Jr. and J. C. Pemberfoe were councilman. Major. Z. B. Hargrove was mayor in 69. In that year T. J, Perry, C. H Smith, J. C. Rawlins, Jas. Nobb, J M. Crogory and J. J. Cohen were die councilmen. In 1873, Major W - F, Ayers was mayor and G. AV. Holmes, T. Mc- Guire, R. V. Mitchell, W. L. White ly* d A, T. Hardin were council men, Henry Norton was Clerk. Major Ayer was also mayor in 71 and had with him the following couneiltaen T. McGuire, R V - Mitch ell, C. H. Smith, C. G Samuels, J E. Veal and R, J. Gwaltney, J. F. Shanklie was Clerk. J M. Spullock was mayor in 1875 Jesse Lambutb, J. G. Dailey, IV. M Shropshire Geo. Bowen, J. L. Camp and Wm, West were councilmen J. W. Meaker was elected councilman during this year to fili an unexpired term. In 18/6—The council was com posed of T W Alexander, mayor; It S Norton, J G Dai lev, Wui West, J C Rawline, J W Bonesjand J W Weaken. J F Shanklin was clerk. This was the council that issued the b >nds which are soon to | be redeemed. In 1877—T W Alexander, re mained as mayor, with the same council except that. Messrs. Frank Woodruff and VV F Ayer succeeded M'-asrs Dailey and Meakin. City dark M A Nevin was elect ed mayor in 1878 with the follow ing vary strong council J G Daily C T Clements Jas. Noble, Halsted Smith, John J Seay and TJ Wil liamson, IV W Seay was the clerk. This council served until 1880. j when Mayor Nevin wis again re- i elected with the following council I T J Williamson. Jas. Noble, P I! J Hardiu, E H West, Jack King and W L Whitely. In 1881 Major Sam Morgan was eleoted mayor and Messis Jas. 1 O CENTS A WEEK Noble, E H West T J W lliamson, M M Pepper, W M Towers and J V Williams were eleded councilman This council elected Col. N»vi« ■lerk who has served in that ca pacity down to the present day. D S Printup was the next mayor and J F Shanklin, Jack King. R A Denny, R T Hargrove Sam Knox and A W Walton were 'he councilmen. Jack King was mayor in 1884* Mr King had as his council W H Wardlaw, WII Adkins.M C Mathis S M Knax, C T Clemen’s and R T Hargrove. Mr, Hargrove resigned and WT McWilliams was elected to fill his uuexpirad term. In 84 the charter was so changed that councilauen and mayor were to serve two years and ceuld not suc ceed themselves The following year mayor King and couneilinen, Adkins Knox and McWilliams retained their positions and Messrs T, F. William son, W. M. Toweiaan iH. S Lnns de l were elected to succeed Messrs \\ ardlaw, Mathis and Clements, Sam Knox was elected mayor in 1886,*J. C. Printup, S S King and J T Vandi ver were elected couucilmen. Shortly before this election the Forth Ward was admitted into tiie city and at thie time J W Mitchell and W A \\ right were elected to represent her. 1 he charter was again changed so that couuciimen were to be eheted every year one from each ward to serve two years and in 1887 W H Adkins, A W Walton, W T Smith and J 1 W right were elected to succeed Messis \\ illiamson, Towers, Lans dell and Mitchell.
