Wood &Co., THE HUSTLER OF ROME, TUESDAY, APRIL 3, 1894. CLYDE SHROPSHIRE. OFFERED THE U, 8- HENAT JRSHIP FH>»M GUORGIA, This morning’s Constitution has the following legardiug an April fool joke that was played on Hon. Clyde Shropshire Vie i Consul of the United’States in Paris: Concerning the appointment of q. unfi'co.'ir to General Colquitt, .ho io .tw .ig incident is ftvl ot intarest as well to applicants tor the place as to the public gener ally. Early last night The Constitu tion received a telegram from one of the New Y’oik papers, asking for three or four hundred words regarding the appointment oi Clyde Shropshir to the office of United States senator of Georgia. The Coi stitutiou at once wired in return that the message was in explicable at this end of the line sayiug that there was no Shrop shire here who had been appoint to the position. The New York papers thereupon telegraphed the name of Mr. Clyde Shropshire, of England, as the man who bad received the plum, and The Constitution naturally in terredjhat Mr. Clyde Shropshire vice consul'at Paris, was the gentle man referred to. It developed that some one in Atlanta had ca bled to Mr. Shropshire iu Paris substantially the following mes. sage, to which Governor Northens signature was attached : “To Hoh. Clyde Shropshire, Vice Consul Amenean Legation, Pans —In order to obviate the in conveniense and entanglement arising out of the necessity of the appointment of a successor to Sen ator Colquitt, I have decided to go out of the list of applicants of prominent Geergiaus now resid i ig in the state who are seeking the position, aud to ask you to accept the appointment, I am firm in my belief that your selection will be happily received by the people of Georgia and 1 respectful ly’and earnes.ly request that you notify me of your acceptance of the appointment.” The American legation at Par s Os course, is the gatheriug place of all Americans visiting at the metropolis. Mr, Shropshire was showing the cable message to some of his friends at the legation, and the news of the appointment was thus communicated to the represeata tives of the New York papers, and by them to The Constitution in Atlanta. The governor was seen a second time about the matter, when he laughingly renlied that it was a costly April fool joke that had been perpetrated by some of Mr. Shropshire’s friends in Atlanta, as the message must have cost $lO or sl2 ta be cabled to Paris. POLICY HOLDER WRITES ’BO T ’T THE NEW YORK LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY. The following letter was written by W. A. Rhudy, one of Rome’s leading business mec, and he “speaks out iu meeting” about the New York Life In*-urauce Company. Mr. Rhudy is a most conservative business man and his letter is strong and to the point, . Rome, Ga., March 5-18)4. Jno. J. Mickle Esq. Agent New York Life Inp. Co. Rome, Ga. Dear Sir:— I have been carrying a $5 .000 policy in the company you represent and have received my first dividend aud settlement I ana so well pleased with the company’s liberality in dealing with its policy holders that it affords me pleasure to sav that I have taken out another $5.000 policy with you and consider myself fortu nate ifi having SIO,OOO insurance in the New York life. Ha ha* grown to be almoat a fixture iu the office of city clerk . For the office of Traaaurar, three namaa were submitted, and of these Cupt. John M. Quian re ceived night. Mr. Quinn ia no stranger iu this aeatiou, he hav ing eerved the county iu the Sher iffs office in the years gone by. Mr. EC. Hough, lhe retired treasurer has been a most efficient efficer. The salary of s>oo was not changed. For the office of City R Girder there were but two applicants and Mr. James Spullock, the young a » torney. received eight of the ten votes. Recorder Sproull Fouche was not an applicant for re-elec tion. Thia office his been paying a salary of S3OO and the figure was not changed. For the afliee of City Physician there was but one applicant and Dr. C.B. Harris succeeds himself, with the same salary, S3OO For the office of City Marshal there were two application* on file and officer J. B. Shropshire, better known as Pink Shropshire, received seven votes and was de clared elected. The old salary ot S9OO remains unchanged. Chief Shropshire has a host of friends in the eity who are congratulating him. Ex-Chief J. C. Brown has made the city a mast capable marshal for the two years he served in that capacity. He is justly popular with the Romans of Rome. For Deputy Marshal, there were two candidates aud officer Win field. Guice was promoted to the Lieutenantcy of the force. He re ceived eight out of the ten votes polled. Every body in Rome knows “Guice of tae police forc» who by bis level headed easy mod est manner and unnerving devotion to duty has endeared himself to all —save the lawless.] Deputy W. L. Collier has served the city faithfully, been a good officer, but-got en the wrong side in the last campaign. Thi Hustlim of Reul -‘wishes Mr, Celiier mighty well.” There were thirty applicants for positions on the police force, and only eleven uniforms to fill. After au informal discussion oi the “best way to get at it.” the council decided that each aider man should write eleven ..names on his ticket and the eleven applicants who received the highest number over a majority, to be declared elected. The plan worked admirably.and in a few minutes the tally sheet showed: C. M. Alexander (old) 10 J. A. Sharp (old) 10 B.T. Logau (old) 10 R.J Mulkey (new) 10 J. A. Celiier (eld) 9 Tom Moore (o d) 9 John Huffman (new) 9 W. D, Jones (old) 8 H. H. Wimpee (•!<<) 8 D. S. Cooper (new) 8 R. H. Copeland (new) 8 The old salary of S6OO psr year was renewed. Mr. John W. Stroud the oldest policeman on the force, having served consecutively ou the police force for over twenty years, was put on the retired list at S3OO. Mr. Stroud has grown eld in the ser vice, and no Roman wants to see the uniform stripped from such a servant —nor will they. Mr. T. L. Tolbert was elected supernumerary of the police force —he to oe paid for time of actual service. For the office of Superintendent of the water works, the salary was cut from SI,OOO to S9OO per annum and Mr. James McGuire elected by avcteof7to fill the place. Mr. McGuire is an able, and most practical man andwill give Rome 1 a splendid service - Ex-Superinteadent Wagnsr Isaves the service of the city to the genu ine regret of a very large eircle of Romes best citizens. He is one of those few “self made men” who have no cause to be ashamed of the job, Rome will probably loose him as such men as he are scarce on the market and his «minent ability will be in demand in |some larger city. Too much could not be said of Lou Wagner, the man whose friends love him and whose enemies hate him. He will yet be heard from “at the top.” For the position of City water works Engineer, seven men had made application. Mr. James M McCaffrey received nine vote* and was elected. At the New water works only one man will be needed and it was decided that lhe water works oommittee should employ the other engineer so long as his services were needed at the old water works The Engineer gats S6O per month, the same as last year. Tbe Water Tax collector, the salary was placed at $360 per an num. The office however, w.is not filled, the council prefer’ng to wan until Superintendent McGuire made a selection. There were bu‘ two applicants, Messrs Albert Hine, the present incumbent and Mr. Jack O Rear, the gallant fire man who while, in the discharge of duty, was crippled for life, about two years age. For street overseer, the salary of SGOO was not changed aid Mr Hughey Given defeated the pres eut incumbent C Brown by a vote of nine to one City Section, P. D. Roser. had but one opponent and was re elect ed, receiving the entire ballot his salary of S4BO, was voted the sam*-. The new office of watchman tn the Reservoir was and three applications considired Mr J, B, Lumpkin was elected on a salary of S3O aud $lO per month aditional allowed him for house rent, until the city erects him a cottage on Fort Jackson. C . E. Woodruff at the same old salary ot S2OO was re-elected City Electrician. J. K Williams theonly applicant was elected City Time Keeper at same eld salary of SIOO per an num. For the office ot J nitor Taiyor Pearsons, col, received 9 votes the other three applicants dividing one amoug them Taylor succeed s himself, The City Printing was placed at the figure of the past two years $240. per annum and was awaid ed The Hustler of Rome by ac climation —there being not a dis senting vote.
