Ihe action takes piece in New York city, opening on pier 24, East Riv er, showing Brooklyn Brid ;e, boats and ferries,Of this play the Pitts burg Press says: “If continued applause and enthusiasm to the point of embarrassment to those upon the stage constitutes a meas ure cf merit, ‘The Midnight' Alarm,’ presented in the Bijou Theater last night for the first time in this city, and to be seen | there the remainder of the week, is, with the present company, an excellent performance. At the conclusion of one act each mem ber of the company was compelled to appear before the curtain, and at the conclusion of another act the audience became almost up roarous. The realistic feature introduced is highly effective, two spirited horses to which is attatched a magnificent and highly burnished engine, emit ting flame and smoke, dashes by n answer to the midnight alarm just as the curtain is about to fall in the fourth act. New and appropiate scenery and an •xcell ent company will make this one of the best shows el the season, Call early for seats at Yeiserv. PINE 1P1? THEY WANT TO COMPROMISE But Mr. Atkinson’s Fiuinds Are Ui- Compromisirg Democrats. The most recent exhibition of the growing weakness of the Evans cause is the condition of affairs in Clayton county. Owing; to its proximity to Atlanta influences, as well as the representations of strong Evans men at Jone iboro, the county has always been put down by the Atkinson peo ple a» being pretty safe for Evans; but this impression really obtained more from lack of information than any other cause. On Monday a prominent citizen from the western portion of Clayton county was in the News and Sun of fice and revealed an unexpected state of affairs in that county’. He said that one of the Jonesboro papers wanted to support Atkinson, but would not do so because it could not get twen i ty-five dollars for such support. We reveal no secret and break no confidence in stating this, for the charge has been repeatedly made in the colums of the Evans contemporary, and it is said that proofs are ample. The Evans pa per. on the other hand, because so unpopular in its advocacy of the general’s cans- that last week it was obliged to change manage ment in order to keep from going under—a process that Jonesboro papers undergo regularly at short intervals. Now the leaders of the Evans party have approached the prominent Atkinson men and of fered to divide Clayton’s delega tion wuh them—one for one. But this the Atkinson men unhesita tingly refused, and are confident of carrying the county without diffi culty.—Griffin News and Suu.
