" Above all others the machinery
e s a Democratic organization
should be kept clean, for it is the
party of honest people, and honest
people do not affiliate with or ap
prove of dishonest methods. Oth
er parties have come and gone but
[the Democratic party is the party
of the massss. and had its begin
ning with the foundation of this
Republic and will continue so
long as the love of liberty burns
in the human heart.
Yet should its leaders betray
its sacred tenets, all is chaos; toi
its principle guarantees equal
justice to all and is founded in
eternal truth; therefore its prac
tice should be as immaculate as
human wisdom can devise, lhe
republican party is a party for

What excuse can a man render
to his God when he stands up and
lifts his silver tongue in the de
fense of a being, (I will not pros
titute the name of man,) who is
devoid of every sense of honor and
purity, a destroyer of life, home
and happiness, when the Scrip
tures plainly say. “an eye for an
eye and a tooth for a toeth?’’
“Oratory, Oratory what a power
thou art, wielded as is so often the
case as much for evil as for good.’’
What attraction is there for a
stranger in a community where
red-handed murder stalks about,
“the monarch of all he surveys”
and where licentiousness is li
censed. and where he cannot find
protection for the honor and vir
tue of his wife and daughter?
You may say that this letter is
plain. I do not deny it for the oc
casion demands plainness. It is
indeed plain but not near so plain
as the fact that the wrongs I have
mentioned do exist in this very
community, Fellow citizens let us
all respect (he name of woman
above everything mor* al, and show
our true Southern blood by protect
ing the honors of our mothers and
wives, sisters and daughters, even
if the law does frown on us for
doing it.
How long Oh! Rome will you
permit wrong to 'be done in the
place ®f right? And injustice in
the place of justice?

INDUSTRIAL INSURANCE.
In the closing days of 1893 one '
of the most astonishing achieve
ments in the history of life insur
ance was announced by the Me
tropolitan Life Insurance Compa
ny.- The company’s ‘'Weekly Bul
letin” bearing the date of Decem
ber 30 made public the fact that
during the last canvassing w-eek
of 1893 the agents of the Metro
politan turned in no less than 80,-
361 applications for new policies
This is almost a larger number
ot applications than ’he biggest of
the giant companies writing regu
lar life insurance receive in a
whole year. When, in October
last, the Metropolitan’s agents
wrote 68,000 applications in one
week, it was supposed that the
high-water mark had been reacned
—even in the Metropolitad’s busi
ness. Rut on the very next trial
the record is carried beyond the
80,000 mark.
