THE PULPIT IO SANCTUM

A YOUNG MINISTER BACKSLIDES —
AM) WE WELCOME HIM.
Rev. Mr. Murdock, editor of the'
News, served notice on his congre- j
nation, the Methodists of East
Rome, on yesterday that his ser
mon last night was the last. So it
seems that when the Hustler of
Rome intimated last Thursday,
that ’h • editer of that sheet, would
likely have to give up the paper or
the pulpiit one, that we were not
so “ignorant” after all .
Rev. Mr. Murdoch is his owi
master and had a right to choose as
he pleased whe» his Presiding Elder
put the choice on him. And as he hr s
chosen to enter the field against us— i
there being room enough for but one
evening paper in Rnp>e—we refrain
from criticising. In tl e meantime

There is this fea’ure of the Gub
[ernatonal campaign, in Floyd,
that I want to mention The pri
mary is to be held on the 26th, of
Mav. On the 21st of May the Rome
Light Guards, one of the best mil-
I itary companies in the State, will
J leave for Griffin to attend the
State encampment, and on the 26th '
will be absent from the city. Now ’
it so happens that nearly or quite '
all the voters of the command,
' from Capt. Patton, down, are Ev
ans men. —and their ballots will
, be sorely needed too.

On the other hand, the Hill City
Cadets, and there is not a better
command in the State—if Ido say
it—is almost a unit for Atkinson. The
Cadets do not go to camp this year—
but as fighting young Democrats,
they will join forces with the old Vet
erans and wool hat boys of the “Ban
ner county’’ and help win a victory
that will add to the name and fame
of Floyd’s unterified Democracy. I
regret that the guards can’t be with
us on the 28th.

My Kolored Kompatriot, Jess
Holt, is doing a good job fcr the
city in sprinkling the streets' Jess
g.ts<ut about 5 o’clock in the
morning and comes close onto
covering his territory before the
merchants open up. Jess is
o.ie—and says if ho keeps up this
sprinkling business much longer
he thinks he will get ordained and
then quit preaching and start a
daily paper. Ha is a reasonably
good ‘‘zorter ” Now 1 don't know
of anv one who could beat him cn
taking up a kollecUon.

Gadsden's most prominent young
citizens were in the city yesterday
and spent a most pleasant day. Mr J
Herzberg returned home last night
Mr. Hughs gors this afternoon while
Mr. Martin leaves tonight. This is
indeed clever iu the young men, to.
in touring themselves away, do so on
th< i stallment plan. There are many
fair maidens in the Hill City who
will be delighted to see the handsome
trip again at an early date.
