Dtar Hustler:
It is a universal fact that when
one is far away from home, he
wants to see some one he has seen
before, or write to some one to tell
of the impressions of the mind
and emotions of the heart, that
the separation from loved ones,
and the new scenes incident, to
travel, have suggested. I feel very’
much that way this morning. And
alter having written to home folks,
I feel like I wanted a larger audi
ence of my friends to speak to—
hence I seek the columns of the
Hustler and beg the attention of
its while I relate the sto
ry of my Texas trip.
In company with my wife and
two little boys, Marcus and Bu
ford. we left Rome via the E. T.
V. & G. R. R. at 5 o’clock on Tues
day May the Sth, for Dallas Texas,
Primarially to attend the meeting
of the Southern Baptist Conven
tion, and secondly to get away
from business, for a much need id
rest and recuperation. We reached
Memphis, Tenn., at 7 o’clock
Wendesday morning and left th-rr;
at 3 o’clock p. m. Making a
straight run for Dalias without
change of cars—reaching that
point at 11 o’cloc'-’ a. m. Thursday ;
time, 20 hours. Distance-, 513
miles. AVe were shown many kind
i-ourtesi *s by the officials of the
East Tenn, and l'< xas Pacific R.
R’s. While in Dallas w« were roy
ally entertained at the famous
McLeod Hoiel.
THE baptist.
It was Mr, Bur.let, the nation’s
humorist that said the Southern
Baptist Convention was the “big
gest thing in the world.” and the
meeting at Dallas showed very
clearly that it is getting bigger
and bigger. A large majority of
the brethren have decided that it
must be devided into 2 or 4 con
ventions, At least 1500 delega’es
and 3000 visitors were present at
the meeting. The Convention was
held in the Sam Jones tabernacle,
which holds 7,000 people ; it was
full all of the session and many
times would not hold the crowds.
Judge Harilson was re-elected
President; Burrows and Georgry
were re-elected Secretaries, and
Gov. Northern Ford, Jones. Eli and
Hatcher were elected Vice Presi
dents. All of the usual work of the
Convention was well attended to.
Daring the meeting the collection
for missions and specific objects
were larger than last year, despite
the hard times.
DALLAS.
Dalias has long been counted
the Queen City of Texas, and for
some four or five years they have
been claiming as much population
as any city in.the State. They have
anywhere from 50.000 to 60,000
people and in some respects they
will compare with any city in the
South. Their court house cost over
three hundred and fifty thousand
dollars, is new and of modern ar
chitecture, and far ahead of any
thing I have ever seen in the
South. The Oriental and McLeod
hotels are the best arranged and
most, costly buildings in the State.
Their church houses are new and
i modern and well arranged for
com'ort, tl e city as a whole, pre
presents a great amount of pu -f
and vim. The women drive horset
:.s fast there, as mon do in Rome;
and the m n twice as sas s . she
1 boom, some years back, put a very
great check upou the city; but
considering the character of its
material resources, Da las is des
tined to be one of the leading
cities of the interior South.
OTHER TOWNS.
Forney, Ferrell, Mineolo and
• Long View are progressive towns

las and Marshall. At Terrell, is
located the State Insane Asylum,
which is su’d to cover more ground
than any l uilding in the South,
, and is iociifod cu one of the mo t
beautiful sites 1 ever saw. Mar
shall and Jefferson are old'r
towns, nearer Texarkana and are
noted for a cultured and refined
society.
Some things you see on the line
of travel, through Texas, are most
beautiful and captivating, and
others are equally as depressing
and uninviting. Just at thTs time
of the year, the praries. with their
thousands of acres of green grass,
fat cattle and wild flowers can not
be surpassed any where in the
wide world. Then on the other
hand, the mossy bayous, the mud
dy creeks and roads, and the en
tire absences of any clear brooks
and c-ol springs is not at all in--
viting to the traveler, thou .h he
may oe goi.«ig at the rate of 4
miles an hour In the prarie coun
try they have three kinds of soil:
the black waxey, the sandy black
loam, and what we in Georgia,
would call craw fish. Only the
block loam is desirable to live up
on. Most of the land from Mineola
to Texarkana, is as poor as the
land in the sandy part of Geor
gia.
We arrived at this piece yester
day at 7 o’clock p. m. and will re
main here, with friends two or
three days and then go by the way
of Hot Springs, Memphis and
Chattanooga home. When I get to
Memphis I will write you an oth
er letter, and tell you what I think
of some other places and things,
AV. M. Bridges.
