Do you wear whiskers? or rather
do you ever employ a barber to,
scrape your chin? I was just ponder
ing over the slick way that Frank
Taylor does the job—but then Frank
is no spring chicken at the business.
He tells me that he’s 54 years old
md hasbetn a sbayer all his life—
perhaps that is one reason he does
not look to leover 40. Aside from
ill tbi ,take my advice and let Frank
have you once—youwilllikeit. tei.

About the closest guessing doue
in the recent Evans-Atkinson
compaigu in Floyd county was by
Col. C. I. Graves. I remember on
Friday, before th° election, Col-
Graves asked me to make a not
of his guess, which I did—and the
guess was that Evans would carry
Floyd county by 165. The official
c >unt gave the county to General
Evans by 164 votes. Thatg whai
1 call pretty close guessing.

THE STUFF H E ARE MADE OF
Take the case of * lovely hi mm
face. It may be asked/ What can
science say about this without de
tracting from its charm?’’ If beau y
were 01 ’y skin deep, we might dread
her interference here. But science
says that beauty is not skin deep. She
can tell you that half the charm of
that face—at least the expression
m a matter of little muscles and a
Gomplex labyrinth of nerves.
That the curves of the lips, the
glance of the eyes, the droop of
their lids, are a matter of the pre
valent aspect of the rniud.
Moreover, that the use of these
organs of expression has come
down long ancestral liues, and that
the mould of the features them
silvesisa question of heredity.
” What is life?” Is a question with
which men have puzzled them
selves in vam from all time.
We are not concerned with an
inquiry after an entity which per
haps, has no more separate exis
tence than the plogiston or princi
pal of fire, of the alchemists.
But what does concern us most
truly is the process of living, aud )
in discussing the stuff we living
beings —men, animals and plants
—are made of, I shall try and
lead my readers a little way into
those mystic haunts tenanted by
those tiny elves to whose ceaselees
aitivity, f rom the dawn of life up
on this globe to this day, are due
to all those ‘-mbodiments, ia end
less variety, of energy and beauty
without which the world would be
a desolate wilderness—a place, in
deed, of blue tky and sea, of sun
rises and sue eels, of majestic
mountains and mirroring takes, of
rocky shores and foam-inugvd
beaches; of many colors and tints,
indeed, but without verdure or
blush of life, u ; any sound, save
the beat of the waves and the sigh,
of the wind, like au endless la
ment that earth and sea had miss
ed the purpose of their creation.
A little child’s idea of bis body is
that of a trunk, head(v.lth mouth,
etc.),legs and aims, find practically,
people—at least those who
enjoy good health—go no . vher in
their analysis. But the tiuihl
that which we c-’l ourselves is the
sum of a couuHest ho. t i tiniest live
each tiny life contributing its tins
share to niaintaimnce ofihat marvel
tus and complex organ : z i>n
known as a living body.
As soldiers mrke the staff of which
an army o .sista, as citizens are the
stuff of which a state is made, so the
stuff which goes to make not only
ourselves, menj and women, but
everything f a has breath and life
and the stuff which goes to the
moulding of those exquisite creatures
of form and color and perfume—the
flowers, as we 11 as of the ancient
fathers of the forest, that stuff c in
sists of living particler.—Sundaj
