14th, the day of Day>, When all
Paris Deserts Street and ehop and

Woods.
I wrote of the fetes of | Mardi -Gras
a nd Micareme.two great days in Par
is bat days which were celebrated
byjfestivities on the great boulevards
of the city .
I am inclinedfto think however that
the Fren< h people e joy some othe r
holidays even more, |for the reason
that their fun is not confined to the
streets but they seek the seclusion cf
the river and forest.
On May 14th, the celebration of
Penteeost efor the great stores and
offioes on thefamous boulevar 1, and
Avenues as well as the little shops in
quarters less frequented,were all clos
ed and the absence of the crowds
that usually fill these thouroghfares
ma de them appear deserted and
desolate-The May morning came and
the May evening faded a perfect
dayand though occasionally clouds
fleckecd the blue and sunny sky, it
was just for fun and not serious.
What did the people do? I can.
not tell you all they did, but some
few went to the many matinee per
formances, and I guess some
went to church, while great throngs
swarmed to the country. Those who
lived up on the Marne and Seine
went down the river, and those who
lived down, went up, and those who
lived near the middle either went
up or down, or to Versailles, Fon»
tainbleau or many of the other beau
tiful environs of Paris.
Near the great forest of Vincen
nes is the beautiful country home
es my law assosiate Hon. Arthur E
Valois where I live and it was from
here .hat I watched the curious thou
sands. Thousands filled the fields and
the beautiful green grass was specked
here and there with many outstretch
ed.and many playing games and
running and jumping and laughing
and singing, others with their great
baskets of provisions their bottles,
for of course not even the poorest
citizens tail to carry these necessary
articles, picnic on the green sward
beaeith the shade of the great trees ■
while others cast their lines into the
river, with infinite pleasure is found
in catching what they call in Geor
gia, minonws ’ and there they spend
the day.
Along in the afternoon by four
clock many pack their baskets
and bring their empty bottles back
them and come to the boat
landing and the tram-car stations,
a -l wishing to be carried back at
the same time. They come back
laden with flowers from the fields
a.l v arieties and bearing branch
horn the trees and home-made
ff alkihg canes and all sorts of sou
-16 nrs of the country. I (flood by

for battery and I guess this is the
reason they do not hit. And many
were the girls in this line, flower
crowned, and many pretty dresses
showed stains of the grass, and the
rocks and of the trees, where perhaps
they had played Robin Hood or re
clined for a pleasant repast. The
girls were the stars in the line and
their bright smiles, bright repartee
and good humor made everybody
laugh.
When the moon came up the line
seemed as great as at four. Some,
growing weary of waiting and went
to the resturant near by and order
ed just what they could afford and
some few indulged in the luxri»s
of snails and champaign and oth
ers went to the Minege near by.
The Menege is the funniest thing
of it’s kind I ever saw. The girls
in Rome used to call them “msr
ry go rounds” and the boys called
them “Flying Jinny’s’’ The mu
sic is ground out by a fellow who
turus a great handle just like a
well windlass aud this somehow
blows a series of horns, and a row
of sticks strike bottles partly fiill
ed with water composing an octave
aud five little automatons strike
bells at the right time and the
music is merry enough. In place
of the customary horse or steam
engine, they have bicycles upou
which the girls with their pretty
ankles aud the boys and the wo*
men aud the men work together
on the pedals until they fairly fly
“around and ’round” Those who
stood by and noticed the sights
seemed to enjoy the fun equally
as much, but after a while they
would return to take their places
in the line homeward bound and
the men and the boys who had
brought their guitars and flutes
and horns blew and played air’s
and music mingling with the
laughters and the songs, made the
night merry. How all got home
that same night I don’t know, for
as long as the moon lasted the
line seemed just as long.

THE CRADLE IS OBSOLETE!. ’
The cradle is fast becoming a
curio, especially in its earlier
hooded form. The modern Amer
ican baby is not cradled and not
carried, but taught to content its
■elf with a mattress like anyon
elss, so that the phrase “the hand
that rocks the cradle rules the
world” refers to a custom that is
now almost obsolete —Kansas
City Star.
ALL IN A TEACUP.
One day at afternoon tea I saw
the gentleman next me quickly
capture and swollow the bubles on
the top of his cup of tea. He felt
my eye on him, and looked up to
see me smiling cynically.
“No,” he said in answer to my
mute question, “I am not supersti
tious K but I must confess to always
capturing a cluster of bubbles on
top of my tea because my old black
mammy used to say : “Quick chile,
eat dem bubbles ; dey mean good
fortune.”
“Oh. I could tell you more
about a cup of tea than was ev*r
dreamed of in your philosophy
unless you were brought up in the
South. Watch our hostess, put
ting in the cream before the sugar.
She is quite unaware that all who
imbibe a cup of tea prepared in
that way will be crossed in love.
“See! You have two spoons
with your cup of tea You will
figure prominently at a wedding
before the year is out. This clus
ter of leaves at the bottom of my
cup, with its few attendant strag
glers, signifies a funeral. The
leaves are all together at the bot
tom of your cup —another sign of
a wedding.
"If a cluster of air bubbles floats
about the sides of a cup look out
for rain; if they remain in the
o °nter, you may wear your tai
weather hat.
JUST SNAKES
Little Eddie Coffer of Churn Creek
Ohio, found a rattlesnake lying in
the sun near the front door of his
lather’s house The reptile was capt
ured alive. It is four and one-half
test long, and has eight rattles and
a button. It will be presented to the
Cincinnati! Zoo.
Walter Clements, a Uniontown
Ky., politician, who is running for
sheriff, killed a snake with fourteen
rattles the other day. He thinks
this is ominous of auccess in his cam
paign asseven is a lucky ntimber,
and fourteen ought to be twice as
jucky.
A big chicken snake wriggled
over the sleeping body of J. W.
Odom at Pryorsburge, Ky. Odom
woke up, He jumped to his feet
and stepped on the snake. At last
he got a light and killed the in
truder. The creature was more
than four feet long.
The little child of James Craft
of Blairstown Md.. was found
playing with a live snake on the
front doorsteps. The reptile didn’t
seem tc want to hurt the child.
But outsiders interfered with the
sport, and his snakeship died for
being too friendly.
Harrison Boone of Morristown,
Pa., killed a snake over six feet
long with a pitchfork a few days
ago. It was of au unusual variety,
Xi’ack with two white stripes run-
ning the whole length of its bvdy.
The most remarkable snake sto
ry of the year comes from Arman
da, Mich., and relates that on me
acre of ground in that place 140
srnkes were kiLed in one after
noon, The crop of snake oil ex
pected to banish rheumatism Ar
