Yesterday a(i«rnoon Deputy M arshall Guice, assisted by officers Jones and Logan and Bailiff B\res, run down and captured Al len Farmer, a young white man who was attepting to pass counter-feit nicklee. When captured Farmer had two purses contming 26 of the spuiious in his pockets. Be was first spot ted by Elbert Hackney, the colored bar tender of Kay & Bro’s lower bar, who refused to take the coun ter foils for whiskey which Farm er had ordered and drank. Deputy Guice, was put on his trail and with the other officers so< n spotted him at the Third Party mass meeting, \\ hen brought out and question ed he said the money was in his wagon in Fourth Ward. The officers went with him but instead of going to the wagon he went in to the stall with his mule, and began to scratch among a lot of bricks bats under the trough. Finally he remarked “That’s strangeatrange wonder if this is my mule;” His conduct was so sus picious that Deputy Guice caught him just as he came out of the stall and after a scuffle had the bracelets on him. at the station house he was searched and 26 new but very poor imitation mckles w.re found in his two purses. Farmer is about <35 years old and says he : “lives on One armed Hardin’s place in Walters’s dis trict.” Says he is a farmer and jack leg biack smith, and that he got the money from a negro wh~> owed him for some chickens he brought to town about, two weeks ago-and that he wouldnt know the negro if he should see .him again. Allen Farmer may be iuocent. but if be is his personal appearance his actions and al! the evidence is against him.
