OP lOUMQ MARION WATSON WUO DHOWNE
IN TONES MILL POND YESTERDAY
SLEEPS THE LONG SLEEP AT BEECH
CBEBK CHURCH.
Last night, when Mr. Seld< n
Richards, embalmer of Rhudy’s
Undertaking establishment was
prepairing the body of Marion
Watson, for burial, he discovered,
a fracture o F the skull just over
the right eye. There wer-i also
bruises on the face head and body
It seems that when the important
you«g man went over the sunken
bunk in Jones Mill pond, that in
tailing his head struck the rocks.
Mr Richards thinks, from the na
ture of the wound on the temple,
that young Watson was not conscious
after being wounded by his tall.
The remains of the young man
were buried at Beech Creek this af
ternoon at 3 •’< 1 ck.
Marion Watson was just 20 years
of age, was a sturdy, energetic
young man aud one of th« swift
est plasteres in,the state. His sud
den and tragic taking off has
proven a terible blow to his father
ers family and has thrown a shad
ow over all that portion of the city
who knew him, his relatives or
friends.
A MODEL OF ELOQUENCE.
THE COWETA STATESMAN IS A MAN OF THE
PEOPLE AND A TRUE DEMOCRAT.
Cjrdele, June 6.—Mr. Atkinson’s
speech in Americus was a model of
eloquence and practical force. It wa s
a vote-winner and Sumter will poll a
great many more Atkinson votes than
it would have done bad not the
speech been made.
Dooly is two to one for Atkinson,
and today’s big excursion show that
Atkinson men are enthusiastic. He
was very much pit ased with the show,
ing. Upon arrival at Americus the
club marched to the Hotel Winsdor.
A brass band headed the procession,
followed by a carriage drawn by six
horses and occupied by Mr. Atkinson
and others. Several hundred Sumter
county Democrats had met the crowd
at the depot and they also rijarched
up. Three banners were carried in
the procession, inscribed as follows:
‘‘Bill Atkinson for governor. ’
“Dooley pays no county tax—s 23,
970 surplus.”
“Dooly County Atkinson C1ub,987
strong.”
“Atkinson’s record against Evans’
boodle—92 to 60 votes up to date.’’
At the Winsdor three cheers were
given for Atkinson, and the crowd
dispersed.
SIMMON’S LEAP FOR LIFE.
WAS A FELLOW ESCAPE OF HORTON, WHO
WAS KILLED AT ROME.
On yesterday while the train was
two miles South of Macon and mak.
.n" 40 miles an hour Joe Simmons
sprang through the car window and
made good his escape.
He had been captured after
mauvbair breadth escapes and was
being returned to the Coal mines
to finish serving out a sentence
for burglary.
He was with Braswell aud Hor
ton when the Rome police, some
mouths ago, killed Horton aud
captured Braswell, Simmons es
caping,
Simmons was seut up from
Darieu for four years for forcing a
lady of the town, at the muzzle of
a revolver, to enter a closet. He
locked the door and robbed her
house of S4OO in money aud valu
ables.
His leap near Macon was a mar
velous feat while his escape is
little short of miraclaous.
