Trimble, one of the leading Presbyterian pastors here, surprised his congregation today by preaching a bitter A. P. A. at tact on the Catholic church. His subject was specifically the rela. ti di of the A . P. A. and the Cath olic church on social, moral and political conditions. He cloeed by aayhEig that the Catholics could not escape the conflict which was hourly growing nearer. Frys 2 for 25c T. This lecture is said to be one of the best ever heard 1:1 the south and as everybody is most cordially invited to attend—there being no tickets, and “ushers with out door keep.th,” it is hoped the church will be packed. Superintendent Murphy, of the Rome Public Building informs me that he will place an advertise ment for bids in a few days and hopes to have dirt broken on Au gust the first. Advice from Judge Maddox says that at last the plans and specifications are about per fected. When work begins I know of no one who can “rush it” to bet ter advantage than my friend Mur phy. Mr * * The City Code, the new’ one t lat we are to have, is dragging too much. My friend Fletcher Smith, the job printer and book binder is loosing money on it —waiting for copy. Whose fault is it? * * * It is said that “Rnetuo.” the Bull Dog perehased by Col. C.-T. Jervis of Lowry Bros, will make his appearance in the ring for the first time during Oct. Pools will be sold at Sugar Valley. Any one having good fighting stock for sale will p ease call on me, make c osest figures, as I expect to pay cash. * ♦ * This afternoon, at 6 o’clock is the hour agreed upon by the mer chants, to close their doors. I know that every merchant who signed that petition means to live up to the agreement—so long as. none of his competitors break over. And I dont believe that a merchant wi.T break over, unless some belated and thoughtless lady customer forces him to. Now—but why dwell on the subject, Surely the ladies will do their shopping just, before 6 instead of just aftsr ward- * I notice that the County Com missioners are grading off the Nev Court house grounds and that they nre having streaks of Bermu da grass set in the clay. The cod iug along the walls has been fin ished, and now a lew Water Oaks should be added and then time be permitted to do the rest, Bermuda grass and Water Oak trees would complete the picture—and a gem of a picture it would be—in a few years. Some people seem to think that a man, that is, an animan built on the model of a man. cannot live in the ■center of a city like Rome, and keep his wife a prisoner- Os course if such of affairs existed, folks would talk, talk, and talk— and talk. The idea of a beautiful and refined woman being cooped up to such an extent that her aged, grey haired, old mother, may not be permitted to see her. even for a moment without the presence in the rooir of the green eyed monster. * * ♦ It strikes me that such a state of affairs wou'd hardly be toler ated in Harem —cursed regions of the Orient. Fancy a loving moth er, at the age vs nearly four score years, refused admittance to ihe presence of her imprisoned baby daughter—after a seperatiou of years. Dees such a case exist in any city in America, in this the 191 b century? “Folks are talking.” and today I was asked if there was any market ibis side of mur ray county for tar and feathers.
