Ths Macon Telegraph has won a Most glorious victory, and yet it does not crow over its adversaries. The Telegraph is patriotic rather 3ian partizan. The Savannah Morning News sails the next goxernor ‘"Atkinson, the Hustler,” It is not a bad same, coming from an Evans source.—Griffin News. The Hustler of Rome extends condolence and sympathy to Hal Mcore, ana Glessner Lets get together boys and have our re songe out of the third party | Well. Dun, thy unfaithful ser vant must paj the penalty.—Au gusta Chronicle. Wyman, he who know how, auay oontinue to forge ahead. Mr, Leon Valliant describes iffor*thaii BOO’species or fish here loibreunkaown to naturalists as inhabiting the lakes of Borneo. That accounts for “the wild man ©f Borneo.” Manage is said to be a lottery and yet no United States law pro tects the poor editor from free col umn write ups. Newspapers will tariff they dong get a protection for revenue. Aspirants for legislative honors in Meriwether county appear to be somewhat backward this year. hasn’t been a single an nouncement as yet, —Newnan Herald. The new suffragist orator in Kan sas is Mrs. Catt. She is probably a rattling talker.—Albany Herald- If treated to a boquet of “Macon eggs”, wonder if Central City people could say: “ The Cat came back!’’ The statistic 3 show that the city having the greatest death rate in the world is Rheims, France, the proportion being 28,62 per 1,000 in each year. Dublin follows with 27,05 and then New York with 26,27. During the past week exports w re larger and imports smaller than during the same pericd last year. The import-ant feature of this condition is that it throws the balance of trade our way —and we dont have to advertise . Gen. Evans said in Atlanta the other day, that he would be in the race until the last county acts, and that he expects to be nominated. — Augusta News That being the case, then in the landguage of Ham, we are “truly sorry for the old gentleman.” Between the 4’h of April and die 4th o f May 170 leaves of ab sence were granted to the mem bers of the National House of Rep resentatives on the plea of illness 1 There are any numoer of men in Congress who will be granted per manent leaves of abscence on ac count of the country’s “illness.’’— ’ L uisville Courier-Journal. 1 Miss Rose Elizibeth Cleveland says the shortest sermon on record is that of Dean Swift, who, hav read the Scriptural text, “He that giveth to the poor lendeth to the Lord,” added, “You see your secu rity ; what do you think about it?” Mips Cleveland lengthens and wealfens the famous remsrk inex cusably. What the Dean is q lotec as saying is: “If you are satisfied with the security, down with the dust.”—Richmond State. The unprincipled newspaper correspondent who has been misu mg Governor Northen’s name should be severely dealt with. — Augusta Chronicle. That’s right, no profane galoot should be permitted to take the name of the hero of the “Way cross War’’ in vain. And while we see no immediate opening for a United States Senatorial position, still the Hustler of Rome is with Pat Walsh's paper. The Atlanta Looking Glass says: ‘The State press is at present ac tively grooming itself fur the great acrobatic act which now seems inevitable, and in a few short 1 fleeting days will tumble into the t Atkinson ranks as gracefully as • the circumstance will permit. It is r painful to flop but it has to come." The Looking Glass is an Evans 3 paper, but it foresees the inevita ’ ble. The cartoon it gives of the ' Evans editors climbing the fence ’ well illustrates the situation. j The Memphis Avalanche says: [ ‘E v angeli6t Sam Jones has many imitators, but no equals in his . eypecial line. It is believed that with all his faults of style and vi o’ation of pulpit proprieties he does much good. The others suc ceed only in reproducing his ob jectionable manerisms and affect- ' ed bad grammer and provincial isms. When the Rev. Sam Jones dies he will not have a successor; neither did Cromwell. It is only once in two or three centuries that a remarkable man is produced in a certain line, The spaces are fill ed up with mediocrity and cheap affectation. Nature's great works, whether intellectual or physical I works, are as distinct and well ] classified as the Alps or the Py- ’ rennees. Tnere is but one Sam 1 Jones and another will not be soon 1 seen. 7 HE HUSTLER OF ROME, MONDAY JUNE 18. 1894. Every man who favors General Evans must be of good cheer and work and talk for their favorite. The time to stand fast to your candidate is when be needs your help. We are firm in the belie f that the General will be the next Governor of Georgia.—Covington Enterprise. Talk about faith, how’s the above, for an am at u re? An enthusiastic supporter of Gen. Evans bet an Atkinson man SIOO to $25 in Americus on Wednesday, that Evans would carry at least 100 of th e 137 counties m the state. Other bets of less odds and smaller amounts were also made. —Griffin Call May 4th. Saying; that there are some Atkin son follwers in Americus who are “doing very well .thank you,”—fur ther comment is unnecessary. A bottle of King’s Royal Germe teur found its way into the editorial sanctum and was welcomed as an old friend. Its tonic and anti-caustic ei~ sects this debilitating weather are magical. It is invigorating and re freshing.— Atlanta Gazette, Then suppose you get a dozen bottles, double the dose and take it oftener—perhaps in the course of time your diseased mind will recover its normin al condition and you will cease to be a monomaniac on the sub ject of abusing Judge Gober, and [ other Georgians, whom the masses now recognize as your superiors. THE END IS NIGH The end is approaching in the j gubernatorial race. It is now only . a question of a week or so. Either General Evans must show his _ strength or his friends in counties that act late will be stampeded by the victories of Mr. Atkinson and leave the old warror without the support he is counting on. It is necessary now for the Evansites to secure 102 votes out of a possible 138 to circumvent Mr. Atkinson and gain a majority in the convention. The question is, can this be done while the Cow etan is picking up the small num ber of 58? Today will prove a straw that shows the way the wind is blowing and by the end of next week it will be almost determined whether Evans or Atkinson will be the next governor of Georgia.—Augus ta Herald. ) THE GUBERNATORIAL RACE. , The victory of Mr. At kinson in Bibb, in our opinion, extinguishes > the last chance that there will be a L reaction in popular sentiment in fa vor of Gen. Evans. The race is prac ’ tically ended. Under the circumstances, it is im possible for Gen. Evans to overcome , the lead of B 0 which his opponent , has gained. In order to do so it , would be necessary tor him to se cure at least 10G of the 160 delegates val tn ho n.hnaan nnd Ina mnal fl.rria-ni lu ue cuoseii, ana uis must araem friend cannot believe that he is able to do that He would need to gain upon Mr . Atkinson much faster du ring the remainder of the race than Mr. Atkinson has gained upon him thus far. We hope consideration of these facts will suggest to Gen. Evans the propriety of withdrawing om the race, in the interest of the Democra tic party. He so without dis credit to himself personally. He has made a plucky fight, and wo are frank to say that we do not believe his fail ure is due to his own mistakes or want of popularity. He went into the race handicapped by the support of the Atlanta Constitution, and that would have been fatal to almost any man in Georgia, if he were opposed by a man with the ability, energy, aggressiveness and organizing talent possessed by Mr. Atkinson. Os course the Telegraph is not in a position to advise Gen. Evans, hav ing opposed him vigorously a>d con sistently: but it has a right to speak in the interest of the Democratic par ty, *f which Gen. Evans, as well as the Telgraph, is a servant. The in terest of the party clearly requires that all useless conflicts in its ranks pio !active o f dissension and wastin" its strength shall be avoided. As we have shown, the continuance of the present contest is useless, and no one can doubt that it is productive of bit erness. —Macon Telegraph. HAM’S HLA’IEST- I was strutting aruuud a while today with ft large hot-house rose ud my laple, 1 Walked up to the Nicholson House cigar stand this morning and bought a cigar and the sweet young lady who sold it to me picked *out a beautiiul rose from a tray, came around the counter, and with a modest blush pinned i on my lapel. II was done so quick I did not have time to.tell her I was unmar ried man, so I bowed and strutted off feeling sorry for her, and think ing what a pity it was that this face of mine has so irresistible. Then I happened to notice sever* ul other fellows standing around with roses on their coats, and I took my thumbs out of the arm-holes of my vest. Just then she pinned one on a one-eyed Irishman, and happening to glance up I saw a sign “Rose a free to customers every Sunday.” In half an hour the place was so full of dudes you could stir them with a stick, and they all t roses with their cigars and they were pinned on by the same fair hand. And then my bigitiness took a big tumble, and I streaked up stairs and took mine off. I guess my face is all right for every day use, but I will not try to pick roses with it hereafter. But hew is this for enterprise on the part of the cigar dealer?—Georgia Cracker. CURIOUS FACTS.
