Through the kindness of Mayoi

a copy of the “Ulster County Ga

WASHINGTON ENTOMBED.
George Town Dec. 20. 1800.
On Wednesday last, the morta
part of WASHING 1 ON the Great
the Father of his Country and th*
Friend of man was consigned to
the tomb, with so it mu honours
and funeral pomp.
A multitude of persons assembled
from many miles round, at Mount
Vernon, the choice abode and lob'
residence of the illustrious cheii.
There were the groves—the spa
cious avenues, the beautiful and
sublime scenes, the noble mansion
—but, alas! the august inhabitant
was .now n > more, That great soul
was gone. His mortal part was
there indeed; but ah! how affect
ing! how awful the spectacle ot
such worth and greatness, thus, to
mortal eyes, fallen! —Yes! fallen!
fallen!
In the long and lofty PußTico,
whwre off the Hero walked in all
his glory, now lay the shrouded
corpse, Ihe countenance still com
posed and serene, seemed to de
press the dignity of the spirit,
which lately dwelt in that lifeless
form. There those who paid the
last sad honours to the benfactor
of his country, took an impressive
—a farewell view.
On the ornament at the head of
the coffin was inscribed Surge Ad
Judicium—about the middle of
the coffin, Gloria Deo—and on
the silver plate.
GENERAL
GEORGE WASHINGTON,
Departed this life on the 14th
December,
1799, JEt, 68,
Between three and four O’clock,
the sound of artillery from a ves
sel in the river, fireing minute
guns, awoke afresh our solemn sor
row—the corpse was moved—a
band of music t with mournful mel
lody melted the soul into all rhe
tenderness of w'oe.
The procession was formed &
moved on in ihe following order, j
Cavalry,
Infantry. [ With arms reversed’

When the procession had arriv

lawn, on the banks of the Potomac,
where the family vault is placed,
the cavalry halted, the infantry .
marched towards the Mount and
formed their lines—the Clergy,
the Masonic Brothers, and the Citi
zens, descended to the Vault, and
the funeral service of the Church
was performed. -The firing was
repeated trom the vessel in the
river, and the sounds echoed from
woods and hills around."
Three generel discharges by in
fantry—the cavalry, and 11 pieces
of artillery, which lined the
banks of the Potomac back of the
Vault, paid the Inst tribute to the
entombed Commacder in Chief of
the Armes or the United States and
to the Hero.
The sun was now setting. Alas! 1
