Young M»o of “io Day."
Inking them they are, aud iu
a lU mp, I confess I dislike them,
()f course, they are useful, euveu
necessary; but I would give auy
thii>gifouecould BetaloilgB etaloilg W,tb ’
out them. Aud yet 1 have arrived
a t a time of life when moat women,
dt(ger t the idol of middle aged dis
tinction at whose feet they sat as
gl rlß and listen by preference to
the egotistical prattle of love
making of hoys. I have tried
over and over again to interest
myself in a young man, and have
generally failed; and this is the
rough result of my experience: 1
divided them into (l)the states
manlike young man (2) the lady
like young man; (3) the wicked
young man; (4) the ordinary
young man.
The statesmanlike young man’s
statesmanship is generally confin
ed to having written an article in
a monthly review, or to say Im
know R the real reason why some
uninterested person did some unin
teresting thing, or to lacking all
sense ot humor. I suppose he was
always avoided except by tne quite
desperate, 1 never listen to him.
and am only conscious after halt
an hour of his society that a heavy
dead weight has been removed.
But they tell me he is rising.
I notice that when a woman tries
to be a man she is very rarely like a
gentleman. But the ladylike young
man is frequently a very well-bred
young lady. His little graces and
attitudes are often pleasing in their
way. He sympathizes keenly with
the very minor troubles of life and
waves the serious ones aside with a
paradox. He is effeminate and effete,
but amusing for awhile, until you
dread the recurrence of his little ex
clamations. He seems to be unpopu
lar with other men, and as one can
hardiy put that down to jealously,
his society is not an honor to a wo
man. He. is not ’ dea Is of what a
young man should be, but is not un
companionable. But when he takes
himself seriously he is singly dread
ful.
If the wicked young man is rea 1 -
ly wicked, I beg his pardon. But I
doubt it; he is very anxious’to tell
you so, To my ear his cynical
iaugh is overdone, his philosophy
of free-living too confident to be
sincere. Men who are really wick
ed—in the conventional sense, as
they would say—seldom flaunt
their vices, This one may be really
-wicked, as the proverb that a bully
Js a coward is not invariably true.
Iu any case, he makes a mistake
if he thinks a woman is really im
pressed by his vague suggestions
of vice A well established reputa
tion for wickedness is an attrac
tion to many of us; on a soi-dis
'ant rake all but the very young
look with susniciou. But, if he
really is the monster he ajsumes
to be, I apologize.
lhe ordinary young man i? neg
atively preferable, of course. Sup
pose him to be neither a prig nor
a bore, like (1). nor despised of
bis fellows, like (2) ; nor immod
est about his vices like (3). Sup
pose him to be ordinarily well
bred. My general complaint is
twofold. Firstly, he is too fond of
personal “chaff,” which is a good
substitute for conversation. It is a
nuisance when conversation w<’Uld
'-Ise have been possible. Besides, it
implies a previous education iir
probably’ tedious details and with
out that he is unintelligible. Sec
ondly, he is too calculating. I do
not wish my friends to go to the
dogs, but to be always thinking of
heir advantage certainly clogs
: some of their finer feelings—thei
eetiee of pathos, «av, nor their
svmpa-hy generally. There was
more .•baudonment about young
men when I was a girl, aud though
it sent some of them under, the
others were, I venture to think,
the more amiable. Nowadays, it
the ordinary young man in poor
he is always t linking (and frer
quHUtly talking) about “getting
on.” if he is rich be is always keen
about having his money’s worth;
he wants to buy life at a store
price.
