THE HUSTLER OF ROMF SUNDAY, JULY, 15, 1884
ABSENT-
MINDED.
Robert Colfsx, an extremely
abseutmined young man cleiked in
a hardware house on Broadway.
He was a handsome fellow and bi
wages enabled him to live in a
good boarding house.
Like most young men of his age
Robert was mad.y in love wish a
pretty girl, the only child of an
old farmer. Love between the two
was well advanced. They ex
changed a regular correspondence
and often made an opportunity to
speak to each other in spite of the
old gentleman, who would never
consent to the match, his only de
sire being that of seeing his Char
lotte married to a rich man.
Aud so it happened that Robert
while attending to the correspon
dence of the firm found also time
to remember his beautiful sweet
/
heart And between one business
letter and auother he (often wrote
oue of love.
A shipment of five kegs of nails
having been made one day to a
Mrs. Thorne, of Rockmart, Col fax
wrote that lady a few lines noti
fying her that fact. He then put
the letter in an envelope and s< al
ed it before writing the address.
A little later on he found time to
drop a line to his loved one, who had
just gone out of town. He wrote:
My Dearest—l love you. How much
you cannot aven imagine. Far from
yon life is unbearable and tiresome. If
yon wish, I shall go to you at once. I
long t® see you. I send you a bonbon
niere. With love, yours, etc.
And in hi> | ibsence of mind, instead
of writing his own name he signed the
letter with that of the firm. He then
sealed the envelope and address it:
“Mrs. Thorne. —Rockmart Ga.”
The letter intended for Mrs. Thorne
read aa follows:
Please take notice that I have
shipped you this day five kegs of the
usual brand • Kindly credit me with
amount of invoice. Youus truly.
He signed it with a flourish Robert
Colfax and had it mailed to his Char
lotte among the firm’s correspond
ence.
Two days afterward Robert received
a letter. He opened it impatiently,
and after readmg it changed color
several times. It was Charlotte who
had wrtten:
Mr. Colfax —I cannot have any
feeling toward one who would send
me five kegs of nails! I imagine
how he would nail me if he were
my husband, I have found here a
healthy man who will marry me
next week. This is the result of
your absence of mind, of which I
have had ample proof. Take care
aud be less distraught in the fu.
ture. Respectfully,
CHARLOTTE GRILL.
After having read this letter for
the third time Robert struck the
desk with his right fist, causing
the inkstand to empty itself on the
books to their utter ruin.
“What in the devil are you do
i g, Colfax? Are you crazy.” cried
the office manager, and Robert, all
confused, excused himself prom
ising to cover at his own expense
the damage done.
Meanwhile he asked permission
and hurriedly left the office.
“Robert, what did you write to
Mrs. Thorne of Rockmarl?” asked
the proprietor of the firm in a
loud tone a few days after.
The notice of the effected ship
ment, quietly replied Robert.
Its impossible.
How so?
Get the letter book and let ue
see, replied the employer.
Here it is.
Mrs. Thorne Rockmart:
Please take notice that I have
shipped you this day five kegs of
nails.
Ah,'ah! said Mr. William. That
widow evidenty has gone crazy. I
cant understand it aud handing
a letter to Colfax he left the room.
The letter ran thus :
Mr. Walter R, William: I ac.
c 'pt your prospoal withgreat pleas
ure. I recollect,your niece appear
ance as veil your marked coustesv
to me when you were here. I shall
expect to see you soon in order to
Yours very sencerly.
MRS. THORNE [nee Black .
Then Robert understood the
mistake ami laughing clumsil}
left the office hurriedly.
The young man started tor Rock
mart the next day in order to in
troduce, himself to the widow
Taking advantage of bis fashion
able appearance and refined man
ners aud profiting by the misun
derstaudiiu, at the same time pre
tending to be a member of the firm
.of W. G, Williams, he introduced
himself to the old and ugly widow.
By courting her for a »few hour B
he succeeded in making Mrs Thorne
fail in love with him. Then he put
things before her in their true light,
acquainting her as to his standing
and explaining the object of his visit
to Rockmart as well as how the mis
understanding had hapjieued.
The old woman was elated and
laughed heartily.
About a month after the departure
of Colfax, Mr. Williams, who could,
not explain the unexpected absence
of his clerk, received the following
communication;
Mr. Robert Colfax (now the pro
prietor of the firm of Thorne, Rock
m.rt) and Airs. He’en Thorne [nee
Black | take pleasure in announcing
their wedding, which took place iu
December last.
And so it was that Robert became
the proprietor of one of the most
important houses in Rockmart
thanks to his absence of mind. —New
