MRS. WOODS COULD NOT BEAM TO SEE HEli CHILDItEX STARVE. Three months ago Mrs. Annie Woods, the wife of a pioduce dealer in Washington market, New York wav deserted bv her husband. She waslelt peumless and saw starvation staring her six children in the face. Early yes terday morning, as a fire engine dash ed by the three-story building, No 174 Central Avenue, Brooklyn, a wo man gave a scream and fell to the side walk striking head first. She was picked up in an unconscious condition and at St. Catharine’s Hospital she was said to have sustained a fracture of the skull aud internal injuries. When she regained consciousness she gave her name as Mrs. Annie 'A oods At a late hour last night it wus said she could not live. The dying woman is only thirty years of age and has been married ten years. Os her six children, her < Idest child is nine years of age. Three months ago her husband deseitedher leaving her penniless For seme lime she secured bread for her children b> pawning her clothing and household goods. Ou Tuesday there was nothing left to pawn, her six children slept on the floor and she could, be seen sit ting at tke window watching the stars "I’m tired of life sue said tv a neigh bor. “aud wci’c it not for my little ones I would kill nqself. Last week she called on her hus band and asked for Lelo, but it was refused her. On the fourth of July she was visited by a relative, and when he had gone she sent for a can of oeer, and while her children slept she was seen sitting ar the front wit - dow crying, and now and then drink ing from the can of beer. The chil dren of the neighborhood, late as it ; was, were yet celebrating the Fourth. Her little ones had asked her duiing the day for money to buy firei r ickers but until her relative called she did not have a cent with which to buy breaa. Mrs Woods, from the manner in which she fell from the window it was thought had fallen out accidentlly . While some of Hie neighois stood about her unconscious form on the sidewalk otheis entered her room aud found her lit tle ones sound asleep When they were a \ a cened they fii t asked for food and the then fur then mother. Two of the children claimed to have beeu aw ike and to have see’ l their mother thrown out of the wii - dow. The police, however do not credit the story, as Airs. Woods stated in the hospital that she had tried to kill herself, because she could not bear to see her children starve. The cause of the seperation from her husband is said to be due to another woman, j Officers of the Society f<m the Preven i tion of Cruelty to CLildreu have tak !en charge cf the children. FROM GOVERNOR TO CLERK IN A COUNTRY STORE. From the office of the governor of a great statte to the position of floorwalker of a big store! That se.-ms not only . improbable but impossible, and yet there is an in stance of the kind on record. Fol lowing Governor Gear’s retirement from the office of the chief execu tive of lowa came. Buren R. Sher man, vho for two years made an excellent governor. Just why the precedent of sec ond term was not followed I can not say, unless it was the opposing wing in the Republican party was too strong for Mr. Sherman and his friends. At all events, he step ped down and out and pursued the even tenor of his way as a private citizen. In some manner the cards refused to break even for Governor Sherman, and as a last resort he was compelled to accept a position as floorwalker in the largest store in the city of Des Moines. In this honorable but by no means exalted position he dis charged his duties cheerfully and was so affable and pleasant that the public liked trading at Des Moines’ big department establish ment. It. was a shrewd business movement upon the part of the proprietors, and they reaped great benefits therefrom fora long time. Eventually, however, the' ex governor dropped out of the clerk's society and quietly disappeared from notice. No one seemed to have missed him particularly, and but few enquired after the urbane ex-governor and obliging floorwalk er. Recently, however, and old time friend of Mr. Sherman hap pened to be in a certain villige in Northeastern lowa, and stepped into a store t<> buy a shirt. There was ex-Governor Sheran measuring calicoes, tying up groceries, and performing other duties devolving upon a country clerk in a country store. Old-time memories were revived and the traveller remained over a train in order to have a visit. In relating these 1 circumstances to the Mail the' gentleman said: “I don’t know what ails the governor —I reckon he has lost his grip. He seems to be satisfied with his job and, apparently, has no ambition to better himself. He was once a power in lowa-—now he is nothing but a dry goods clerk. I don’t un— derstank it.” —Chicago Mail. -oa HUM ~ u “'’fflgSft BS& BBKfc, 1 ISS&y t x : MiSW c*'- ,«h> HtfWl («Wk • ina* w> t,-Ws'*«a w «MknMM (CURES all skin I AND >jyjßs DISEASESJ i’;.;-.' »<•>?» ,ti '«, P.
