POPULISTS DIFFER, TOO,
In his speech at Grover Saturday,
Mr. \\ at son devoted much time to
enlarging | ipon the differences iu th *
Democratic party, and declared that
Populists all believed alike That a
Populist is a Populist wherever you
dnd him, and is the same kind _ot a
Populist with every other one? He
said there are free silver Democrats
and gold Lug Democrats and many
!, <.!i*‘r iiorts, but that ail Populists were
together on ail public questions
The S.ivaunah News of the same
d de as Air. Watson’s speech says:
Mr James, United States district
attorney for the northern district of
Georgia, in an interview, mikes a
telling point against Judge Hines, the 1
Populist candidate jor governor*
‘Judge Hines,’ says the district at
torney, “in his speeches announces
himself iu favor of the repeal of the 1(1
per cent, tax on State bunks, and
blames the Democratic party for the
defeat of tie mea.-ure.” The district
attorney calls attention to the iac t
that ‘ the record show's that everyon e
of the Populist members of congress
voted with the Republicans against
the bill.’ “ft was the obstructions,”
says the district attorney, “which they
tLiew in the way of ihe Democrats
that prevented the bill from becom
ing a law. ’
Thus it will be seen that there are
differing views among individual
members of the Populist party, just
as there are in all other parties. The
boast of unanimity in the Third party
is an idle claim, and the action of the
Populists in congress in voiing against
the repeal of the 10 per cent, tax on
the issues of State banks, of which
the Populist candidate lor governor i b
ad vocating the repeal, is convincing
evidence that all men do not think
alike aud vote aiike among the Popu.

REED PAID FOR THE WINE.
Ex-Speaker Reed was stretched
out on a sofa in the House, and
Representative Bynum was writ
ing letters. Representative Berry
of Kentucky passed by.
“I should say.” said Bynum to
Reed, in an off-hand way, “that
Berry was the tallest man in the
House.’'
A look of ineffable scorn flitted
across the face of Mr. Reed. “By
num,” he said, ‘‘why is it that I
have always to go around dispen
sing informal ion to t he Democratic
side. Don’t you know that Curtis
of New York is the tallest man in
the House? Bynum, I am surpris
ed at your ignorance.’’ And Ar.
Reed settled back on the sofa as if
he had settled the question forever
and forever.
“I am willing to pin my faith
on Berry,” said Bynum, quietly.
“Well,” spoke up Reed, “if you
will be foolish, I will go you a
bottle of wine on it.”
Out went a couple of pages to
hunt up Mr. Curtis and Mr. Ber
ry. Half a dozen members who
had overheard the wager awaited
the result. The New’ Yorker and
the Kentuckian came up together
—Mr. Curtis tall and straight.
Mr. Berry stooping slightly. There
was no question as to who was the
taller.
“There,” said Mr. Reed, with a
tone of triumph, “what did I tell
you?”
But at that moment Mr. Berry,
having heard the question at is
sue, began to unfold himself, so to
speak, like the swan necked wo
man in the dime musuem. His
long legs straightened out, his
back gathered inches unto itself,
his head rose up in the air, and
presently Mr. Curtis—six feet and
four inches though he be—was a
dwarf.
“My God, Berry,” exclaimed
Mr. Reed, somewhat irreverently,
but with an expression of awe in
his voice, “how much of yourself
do you keep in your pockets?”
And then the crowd went down
and ate wine at Mr. Reed’s ex
pense. —Washington Post.

JUDGE AND JURY.
Some good stories are going the
rounds concerning Sir Matthew
Begbie, chief justice of British
Columbia, who died the other day.
Here is one of them : In 1883 a
man was charged iu Victoria with
having killed another uun with a
sand bag, and in the face of the
judge’s summing-up the jury
brought in a verdict of “Not Guil
ty.” This annoyed the chief jus
tice, who at once said :
•‘Gentlemen of th i jury, min i,
that is your verdict, not mine. On
your conscience will rest ihe stig
ma of retiming such a disgrace
ful verdict, Many repetitious ot
such conduct as yours will make
trial by jury a horrible farce, and
the city of Victoria a nest of im
morality and crime. Go. I have
nothing more to say to you ”
And then turning to the prison
er. he added : ou are discharged.
